Oftentimes the consequence of being a reliable, effective worker is … more work. And, while the reputation of being productive is generally a good thing, even the most organized, go-getter can’t do it all. If your boss consistently asks you to take on tasks for which you don’t have the bandwidth, it’s okay to say “no” sometimes, says Brandon Smith, a therapist and career coach known as The Workplace Therapist. This isn’t always so easy, though. Denying a request from a person who has some control of your income is understandably nerve wracking. “You always want to treat a boss…

Are you a formerly "gifted" kid, struggling to find success as an adult? Organizational psychologist Adam Grant may have a solution for you. Put simply: Instead of giving up when things don't come naturally to you, start thinking like a "late bloomer." "Natural talent is overrated," Grant, a bestselling author and psychology professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, recently told CNBC's "Squawk Box." "Most child prodigies do not grow up to become adult geniuses. And I think that leaves us to really underestimate the slow learners, the late bloomers." You need to be able to try new things,…

Watch out for organisational sycophancy

We often hear corporate leaders talk about transforming their company culture. But this transformation needs to be more than a buzzword – it has to start with an honest analysis of an organisation’s current culture. This authenticity is vital because organisations have unspoken codes, and therein lies the hidden truth that unmasks their culture. Corporate leaders need to be genuine seekers of what they need to hear and not what they want to hear from employees who are just there to butter them up. Those kinds of employees are sycophants – people who will tell you what you want to…
Shell confirmed on Friday that Nigeria withdrew civil claims totalling $1.1 billion against it in relation to allegations of corruption in a 2011 oilfield deal. "We are pleased that this claim has been withdrawn. It brings to an end to all legal cases against Shell on OPL 245 in Italian courts," a Shell spokesperson said in a statement. In 2021, an Italian court acquitted Shell, Eni, the operator of the OPL 245 oilfield, and company executives of corruption allegations in the acquisition of the field a decade earlier. Eni confirmed Nigeria had withdrawn the claim on Thursday. Reuters
Banks now owe telecommunication firms N200bn for Unstructured Supplementary Service Data services. Telecom operators disclosed this on Thursday at the Nigerian Communications Commission industry interactive session with the new Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the commission, Aminu Maida. The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria, on behalf of telcos, stressed that the debt will not be forgiven. ALTON Chairman, Gbenga Adebayo in his goodwill address to the EVC said, “The banks owe us money. The debt is now over N200bn. It won’t go away, no one will forget the debt if the money is not paid.” He highlighted…
In the world of mental health, “dysmorphia” describes an obsessive focus on perceived defects in one’s body. People with body dysmorphic disorder may find themselves constantly comparing themselves unfavorably with the appearance of others. Ali Katz, an estate lawyer and founder of the Family Wealth Planning Institute, sees an analogous phenomenon in the world of financial psychology — a state in which someone’s self-perception regarding their money doesn’t match reality. She calls it “money dysmorphia.” “It’s a distorted view that we have around money that causes us to make poor decisions,” Katz says. One common form Katz sees among her…
Managing time efficiently to stay focused, sharp, and productive is an arduous task for many entrepreneurs. It's easy to get caught up in major projects and neglect other tasks or personal time. To gain insight into effective productivity, here's what I found from my various interviews with busy founders and experts over the years. 1. Schedule breaks throughout the day One productivity mistake so many of us make is working for hours at a time, sometimes right through the lunch hour, and neglecting to take frequent breaks. Tony Schwartz, CEO of the Energy Project and author of The Way We're…
In today’s competitive job market, retaining talented employees is challenging, particularly given that local companies need to compete against global companies in countries with stronger currencies when hiring great teams. This is how businesses can cultivate nurturing work environments, keep great talent and ensure sustainable growth. 1. What to do Pay Well: Competitive salaries and benefits packages are your most effective retention tool. This hasn’t changed much, and if you are serious about retention, consider paying above market. Embrace Freedom: Beyond financial incentives, employees value benefits linked to autonomy. Flexible work hours and remote work options are now expected to…
