A new attempt at a ceasefire in fierce fighting between Sudanese troops and paramilitary forces in Khartoum failed on Wednesday, leaving people fearful about dwindling food supplies and a breakdown in medical services. The 24-hour ceasefire - lobbied for by countries trying to evacuate their citizens after days of conflict - was supposed to come into effect at 6 p.m. local time (1600 GMT). However, two eyewitnesses in separate areas of the capital told Reuters that fighting had continued. Earlier in the day, continuous bombardments could be heard in central Khartoum around the compound housing the army HQ - where…
RUSSIAN PERSPECTIVE Russia ‘winning’ fight against Ukraine – retired US Army colonel Russia is defeating Ukraine and the recent leaks of US classified documents will not change the outcome on the battlefield, retired US Army colonel and former Pentagon adviser Douglas Macgregor has said. “I think the Russians are winning anyway, and the Russians know the truth,”Macgregor said in a video uploaded to his YouTube channel on Sunday. “The Ukrainians themselves know the truth. They’re in a very terrible position right now. We’ve been pushing them to launch this massive offensive in the spring,” Macgregor argued. “And, frankly, [Ukrainians] don’t…

Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court in Abuja, yesterday, set aside the removal of Ifeanyi Ararume as Non-Executive Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). This was just as some industry analysts yesterday stressed that the stability of the NNPCL should be top priority at this moment. Ekwo in the judgment held that Ararume’s removal by President Muhammadu Buhari contravened provisions of the NNPCL laws as well as the Company’s and Allied Matters Act. The judge consequently made an order reinstating Ararume as Non-Executive Chairman of the NNPCL Board with immediate effect. Ararume had…
Eight secondary school students kidnapped by gunmen in Kaduna state two weeks ago escaped from their captors and were found by villagers who alerted security forces on Tuesday, the state's internal security commissioner said. Armed gangs operating mostly in remote parts of northwest Nigeria have carried out violent attacks against villagers, schools and motorists, abducting hundreds for ransom. The female students were seized by an armed gang on their way from school along with an unknown number of others, authorities said on April 4. Samuel Aruwan, Kaduna commissioner for internal security and home affairs, said the students escaped from a…
Questions have been raised after a deceased stowaway was discovered in the wheel well of a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Boeing 777 (registered PH-BQM) on Monday. The aircraft originated from Lagos, Nigeria, and an investigation has been launched to determine how and when the man climbed into the plane. The Royal Dutch Marechaussee has stated that stowaways in wheel wells face extreme temperatures that can drop as low as minus fifty degrees during longer flights, making survival virtually impossible. Despite the risks, some stowaways still attempt to use this method to travel without proper documentation or authorisation. This unfortunate incident…

Day 4 of battles of Sudan military factions

Heavy gunfire shattered a 24-hour truce in Sudan on Tuesday shortly after it was due to take effect under U.S. pressure on warring military factions to halt fighting that has touched off a humanitarian crisis. Loud shooting reverberated in the background of live feeds by Arab television news channels in the Khartoum capital region minutes after the agreed 6 p.m. (1600 GMT) onset of the ceasefire. Warplanes were roaring in the skies above Khartoum, a Reuters reporter heard tanks firing shortly after the truce was due to take hold, and a resident told Reuters he heard an air strike being…
WESTERN PERSPECTIVE Putin, Zelenskyy rally troops with war poised for new phase Russian President Vladimir Putin visited command posts of his forces fighting in Ukraine for the second time in two months, officials said Tuesday, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made his latest trip near the front line. The visits — on different days and in different provinces — sought to stiffen the resolve of soldiers as the war approaches its 14th month and as Kyiv readies a possible counteroffensive with Western-supplied weapons. Some of the most significant of those weapons appeared to have recently arrived in Ukraine. Germany’s official…
Domestic flights in Nigeria were disrupted on Monday, local airlines said, as aviation employees in Lagos blocked roads to the country's busiest local airport to begin a two-day strike in protest over working conditions and wages. The strike is likely to add to problems in a sector that regularly faces jet fuel shortages, which often ground local flights and where international carriers struggle to repatriate revenue from ticket sales due to dollar shortages. Air Peace, which also flies international and regional routes and has the largest fleet, told passengers that "flights across our network will consequently be disrupted" due to…
