WESTERN PERSPECTIVE An uneasy quiet settled over Kyiv on Friday despite air-raid sirens that blared there and across Ukraine shortly after a Russian cease-fire declaration for Orthodox Christmas went into effect. Ukrainian and Western officials have scorned the truce as a ploy. No explosions were heard in the capital. And reports of sporadic fighting elsewhere in Ukraine could not immediately be confirmed. Clashes there could take hours to become public. Kyiv residents ventured out into a light dusting of snow to buy gifts, cakes and groceries for Christmas Eve family celebrations, hours after the cease-fire was to have started. Russian…

Motorists and commuters, yesterday, appealed to the Federal Government to adopt more measures to reduce gridlock along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as contractors returned to site after the festive season to resume construction works. A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Correspondent who took a trip on Section One of the highway, yesterday, reports that work men who returned to site on Tuesday were seen between Kara…
RUSSIAN PERSPECTIVE Putin assures Erdogan of Russia’s openness to dialogue on Ukraine Russian President Vladimir Putin told his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a phone conversation on Thursday about the destructive role the West has been playing by pumping Ukraine with arms and assigning targets to it, according to the Kremlin. The two leaders "discussed the situation around Ukraine. Russia laid an emphasis on the destructive role of Western countries who have been pumping the Kiev regime with weapons and military hardware as well as providing it with operational information and assigning targets to it," the Kremlin said in…
Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, budget and national planning, says the federal government spent a total of N5.24 trillion on debt servicing between January and November 2022, out of its N6.5 trillion retained revenue for the same period. Ahmed said this in Abuja on Wednesday during the public presentation and breakdown of the approved 2023 budget. The minister put the country’s debt service-to-revenue ratio at 80.6 percent for the period under review — a figure far above World Bank’s suggested 22.5 percent for low-income countries like Nigeria. Africa's biggest economy spent 2.91 trillion naira ($7 billion) towards a petrol subsidy between January and September 2022, state-owned firm NNPC said, a cost the government has blamed for dwindling public finances.
