Lawmakers have budgeted an additional N30 billion for the renovation of the National Assembly Complex in the 2024 Appropriation Bill. The N30bn earmarked for the renovation of the building was part of the N344.85bn budgeted for the National Assembly after they raised their allocations from N197.93bn. The N344.85bn, signed by President Bola Tinubu on January 1, is the highest ever allocated to the legislature. Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says it has disbursed approximately $61.64 million to foreign airlines through various banks. The payment is part of CBN’s efforts to decrease its remaining liability to the airlines and clear the forex backlog to commercial banks in order to ease pressure on foreign exchange. Recall that in November 2023, foreign airlines operators disclosed that about 90 per cent of their $783m trapped funds had not been paid. Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has budgeted N8 billion for local and international trips in 2024. The amount was presented in the 2024 government-owned entities’ (GOEs) budget proposal. The GOEs’ budget comes a week after the national assembly passed the 2024 appropriation bill, increasing its size from N27.5 trillion proposed by President Bola Tinubu to N28.7 trillion. In the national budget, the federal government earmarked N1.7 trillion for statutory transfers, N8.7 trillion for recurrent expenditure, while N9.9 trillion was allocated for capital expenditure. Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Oluwatoyin Madein, has faulted the ‘disbursement’ of N585,189,500.00 into a personal account. Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, in a viral document personally signed by her and directed to the Office of the AGF, instructed the payment of the funds to one Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola. Betta Edu, minister of humanitarian affairs, has asked Oluwatoyin Sakirat Madein, the accountant-general of the federation, to transfer N585 million to the bank account of an individual. The instruction for the payment is contained in a leaked letter dated December 20, 2023. Men and commanders of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, from Ekiti, Oyo, Osun, Ogun and Ondo states held a walk on Thursday in Akure in honour of the late Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.
