An Appeal Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Friday ordered Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise Mr David Lyon as the Candidate of All Progressives Congress for today’s governorship election in Bayelsa State. Ruling on a motion ex-parte filed by the lawyers of Lyon, the court set aside the judgment of Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa presided over by Mrs Jane Inyang. The court said Lyon remained candidate of APC for the election pending the determination of an appeal he filed against the judgement of the lower court. The Nation

Clashes broke out in the streets of Bolivia’s capital Tuesday evening when an opposition leader in the Senate declared herself the country’s interim president after Evo Morales fled to Mexico following his surprise weekend resignation. Jeanine Añez claimed the post of Senate leader late in the day, a position next in line for the presidency, even though she lacked a quorum because of a boycott by Morales’ Movement for Socialism party. Without being sworn in by anyone, she then appeared on a balcony of the old presidential palace wearing the presidential sash and holding a Bible in her hand. “My…
President Evo Morales resigned Sunday under mounting pressure from Bolivia’s military and the public after his re-election victory triggered weeks of fraud allegations and deadly protests. The decision came after a day of fast-moving developments, including an offer from Morales to hold a new election. The crisis deepened dramatically when the country’s military chief went on national television to call on the president to step down. “I am sending my resignation letter to the Legislative Assembly of Bolivia,” the 60-year-old socialist leader said, portraying his departure as the culmination of a “coup d’etat.” He added: “I ask you to stop…
It's long been believed that women are less combative than men – more likely to sue for peace than go to war. But a study reveals queens have been 39 percentage points more likely than kings to wage war over the centuries. Researchers set out to test whether there was more peace under female or male rule. US experts analysed mainly European kings and queens between 1480 to 1913 – covering 193 reigns in 18 countries. The study included Britain's Elizabeth I, who famously defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588, Catherine the Great, who made Russia a formidable power in…
When Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari seeking approval for funds to continue his role in resolving the deadly farmers-herdsmen conflict earlier this year, he did so with little awareness that a middleman would intercept it, moderate it and ultimately discard his role altogether. Yet, that was exactly what transpired after Mr Osinbajo pushed a memo to Mr Buhari earlier this year that was subsequently undermined by Mr Abba Kyari, the president’s chief of staff. After successfully rubbishing Osinbajo’s request to Buhari, Kyari went on to instigate the president to sack Osinbajo from his role as the head…
