Speaker of House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, has condemned distribution of cash to Nigerians by the federal government very close to the general elections. Dogara stated this on Monday during a public hearing organised by National Assembly Joint Committee on INEC and Political Parties Matters on Vote-buying and Improving the Electoral Processes in Nigeria. He said no matter how noble the intent may be, such endeavours amount to vote buying and inducement, and can be considered corruption. President of Senate, Mr Bukola Saraki, had made a similar allegation, accusing the federal government of using the TraderMoni programme as a…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has introduced a new measure on ballot paper handling at polling units to check vote buying in 2019 general elections. Its Chairman, Mr Mahmud Yakubu, disclosed this at a public hearing on ‘Vote Buying and Improving Electoral Processes in Nigeria’, conducted by National Assembly Joint Committee on INEC in Abuja on Monday. Yakubu said in 2019 polls, ballot papers would be handed to voters rolled up before they proceed to polling booths to cast their votes. He explained that voters, in turn, must also roll up and flatten the ballot papers before leaving the polling…
President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Mr Samson Ayokunle, on Monday urged Nigerians to avoid desperate politicians by voting only credible candidates in 2019. Ayokunle made the remarks while briefing journalists after a meeting with representatives of 14 presidential candidates in Abuja, on their plans for Nigerians and the church. He said that the church decided to reach out to stakeholders and presidential candidates to ask them their credentials for aspiring to the highest position in the country. According to him, the church cannot keep quiet in this situation because the church can only prosper when a nation prospers.…
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday denied a report which indicated that he had dropped his support for Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Mr Atiku Abubakar. He faulted the report which also stated that he had no preferred presidential candidate. Mr Obasanjo said only a fool would sit on the fence. The ex-President said these in a statement by his media aide, Mr Kehinde Akinyemi, made available to journalists in Abeokuta. In the statement titled, “2019 elections and reports of Mr Olusegun Obasanjo’s neutrality”, Obasanjo said he was in Cairo to attend the maiden edition of Intra-African Trade Fair where…
National Christian Elders Forum, led by a former Minister of Defence, Mr Theophilus Danjuma and Mr Solomon Asemota, will meet on Monday (today) to take a position on whether or not it should endorse a presidential candidate among the ‘new entrants’ for 2019 elections. The Monday’s meeting follows an earlier one in Lagos which the forum held with those it described as “13 new presidential candidates.” The forum had earlier said that rather than propose “two evils” from which Nigerians should choose, righteousness should be the basis for a new President for the country in 2019. Secretary of NCEF, Mr…
There were strong indications on Saturday evening that Senate would, this week, begin the process to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to withhold his assent to 2018 Electoral Act amendment bill. Senate spokesperson, Mr Ben Murray-Bruce, said the red chamber had rejected Buhari’s reasons for declining assent to the legislation and would do everything possible to override his action. A cross-section of senators, who spoke with our correspondents on the issue on Saturday, vowed to make Mr Buhari’s position a major issue on resumption of plenary on Tuesday. They vowed to ensure that all amendments made to the new electoral…
Barely two months to next year’s elections, some northern leaders say they will not support President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election. They, however, shied away from announcing their preferred presidential candidate in the elections, insisting that the candidate to support remained one of their own from the list of 71 presidential hopeful cleared by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to contest 2019 elections. The only other high profile candidate in 2019 presidential election is Mr Atiku Abubakar of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Convener of Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), Mr Ango Abdullahi, spoke the mind of northern leaders in Kaduna. However, three key…
Two issues will drive All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign for 2019 elections, it was learnt yesterday. The issues are: character of the contestants, including President Muhammadu Buhari; andBuhari administration’s achievements. But main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is stressing restructuring as magic pill for Nigeria’s ailments. Its presidential candidate, Mr Atiku Abubakar yesterday promised to initiate restructuring within the first six months should the party win the election. He spoke in Ibadan at the opening of PDP’s campaign in the Southwest. In Abuja, APC National Working Committee (NWC) met with its governorship candidates as a prelude to take-off of its…
