The 17 Southern governors met again last Monday in Lagos to discuss and or respond to national issues of common interest to them and their people. At the end, they issued a communique which was well measured and apt, addressing all the germane issues in a mature, responsible, and responsive manner. The communique, I dare to say, hallmarked civility without compromising virtues. The North and its uncouth, irascible, rambunctious leaders and self-appointed spokespersons have a lot to learn from the Southern governors. Despite provocations and assaults from the North, the Southern governors have kept their cool and have refrained from…
Before Nnamdi Kanu was arrested, I did not know who he was. I just defended his right to freedom of expression and association. Various Igbo leaders called me privately to thank me. It would be wrong to mention their names, because of the challenges of the moment. When Kanu was rearrested, I called a British government official and got the facts. I was the first (not one of the first. The first) to reveal that he was arrested in Kenya, and not in The UK. After I released this information, the media ran with it. Yesterday, a former Presidential candidate…
The Ethiopian state of Tigray is the latest region to attempt to break away from the central government of an African nation. The Tigrayan People's Liberation Front retook the capital city of Mekelle last week, setting off celebrations by civilians suffering at the hands of the Ethiopian military. The conflict is far from over. Just a year before, the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, had received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in calming ethnic tensions in his country. What happened? The answer may be found in revolutionary ethnic zeal, tension with a central government that may have ignored…
I read the press statement put out by DSS on its early morning invasion of Sunday Igboho's abode, and couldn't stop wondering what was happening! How could a surprise armed attack by an agency of the State, on a man's premises, and without a search warrant, constitute the appropriate response to his rascality? How many hideouts of bandits and sundry highly disruptive elements wreaking havoc and making a boast of slaughtering soldiers has the DSS stormed in similar manner? Aren't we aware that some State governments sit at negotiating tables with unrepentant killer herdsmen? Didn't we read about one governor…
This is how capitalism ends: not with a revolutionary bang, but with an evolutionary whimper. Just as it displaced feudalism gradually, surreptitiously, until one day the bulk of human relations were market-based and feudalism was swept away, so capitalism today is being toppled by a new economic mode: techno-feudalism. This is a large claim that comes on the heels of many premature forecasts of capitalism’s demise, especially from the left. But this time it may well be true. The clues have been visible for a while. Bond and share prices, which should be moving in sharply opposite directions, have been…
Yesterday I announced that I would unveal my thoughts regarding the IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu. Several people reached out, advising me to be neutral and steer clear of political discourse. They meant well for a young female writer with a reputation to protect, an image to project, and the care not to cause offense. I almost yielded but changed my mind this morning. The Igbos are the same people about whom I wrote my current published work, In Blood and War, a book set in the then troubled Biafra. On principle, I consider it unethical to make money off retelling…
Nigerians of all faiths should rise up in condemnation of the Nigeria police men who stripped fellow human beings to their underpants and yanked off their symbols of self protection at the recent Rally at Ojota, Lagos. It should be emphasized that what those hapless citizens had on them were not in any way different from the Christian Cross or the Muslim Tesubah or the Catholic Rosary or whatever object including the bullet- roof vest that individuals believe can offer them self protection. This barbaric act of the Nigeria Police was what Colonialists did to the Tivs in Nigeria and…
“First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me – and there was no one left to speak for me” – Martin Niemoller. Martin Niemoller (1892 – 1984) was a prominent Lutheran pastor in Germany who emerged an outspoken public enemy of fascist Adolf Hitler, spending the last…
Postwar capitalism trades not on happiness but on unhappiness. If you listen to economists talk about the world right now, you’d be forgiven for feeling a little confused. The pandemic precipitated the worst recession since the stock market crash of 1929. Now, we’re told, the U.S. and China could be heading for the fastest recovery on record. But it’s set to be uneven—a “tale of two recoveries,” according to the World Bank. The best of times for the rich. The worst of times for the poor. Same as it ever was. What does this all mean as we emerge from…
The claim that Kenya was where Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) was arrested and extradited to Nigeria had better not be true. Kenya? While Nigeria has stubbornly but ostensibly hidden the identity of its accomplice nation in the crude and gangsterish abduction saga, the United Kingdom, whose nationality Kanu holds, through Dean Hurlock, Head of Communications at the British High Commission in Nigeria, swiftly denied that the event took place on its soil. Kenya’s High Commissioner, Wilfred Machage, attempted to go the UK route by disclaiming the country’s involvement in the messy saga. Kanu’s brother,…
