Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has accused the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, of inciting violence following the outcome of the Presidential election.

The allegation was made during the minister's official engagements with international media organisations in Washington DC, USA.

Mohammed criticised Obi for seeking legal recourse while at the same time urging people to take to the street. He further accused Obi and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, of threatening Nigerians by suggesting that the election of Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would spell the end of democracy in Nigeria, which he labeled as treasonous behavior. The minister noted that Obi's actions were those of a desperate individual who did not believe in democracy unless he was the winner.

Mohammed argued that neither Obi nor Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), met the constitutional requirements to become president. The President-elect was the only one who met the criteria by obtaining the plurality of votes cast in the election and scoring one-quarter of votes cast in at least 25 states. Mohammed pointed out that Atiku, who came in second with 6.9 million votes, only managed to make one-quarter of the votes cast in 21 states, while Obi, who came in third with 6.1 million votes, won only one-quarter of the votes cast in 15 states. The minister emphasized that it was impossible to win an election in which one came in a distant third and failed to meet the constitutional requirements. Mohammed also criticised Obi for not disowning his victory in Lagos despite complaining of fraud.
