Council of Elders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to hold accountable all those involved in the attack on Lagos' Igbo residents and the destruction of their properties in the state.

In a communique issued after an emergency virtual meeting held on Wednesday and made available to journalists on Thursday, the Council condemned the ethnic profiling of the Igbo in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria, reminding Nigerians and authorities that these events were similar to what led to the 30-month civil war that claimed millions of lives.

The Council, which had members from Nigeria, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Italy, and other parts of the world, directed Ohanaeze Ndigbo to set up a Committee of Inquiry in collaboration with the Council to investigate the assault and destruction of Igbo properties in Lagos. It also established an emergency telephone line for the Igbo in Lagos to report any attack.

The communique was signed by various members, including Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Chairman of the Council of Elders in Nigeria, and Okey Emuchay, Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

The emergency council meeting was called to review the painful and agonising experiences of the Igbo in Lagos during the recent general election.
