Strangely

An 87-year-old Iranian man who has been living on the streets and hasn’t taken a bath in almost seven decades recently baffled scientists with his good health. We first wrote about Amou Haji in 2014, dubbing him ‘the world’s dirtiest man‘. At the time, he was living in a small village in Southern Iran’s Fars province, surviving on roadkill and dirty water, and staying as far from bathwater as possible, thinking it would make him sick. He was 80-years-old at the time and appeared to be in good overall health, despite his questionable hygiene and living conditions. Well, apparently not…
Indian police recently arrested a disgruntled charity worker accused of setting fire to a bank branch in Karnataka after being denied a loan. 33-year-old Wasim Hazaratsab Mulla, a charity worker from Haveri, approached state-run Canara Bank for a loan of 1.6 million rupees ($21,600) in December of last year. His application was eventually denied, because of discrepancies in the submitted paperwork which broke the bank’s credit policy. Wasim allegedly didn’t take the news too kindly, riding his motorcycle to the bank branch on Sunday, January 9th, breaking open a window to spray a flammable liquid inside and setting the building…
No woman in the world can have their period using just two disposable sanitary pads. A typical pack of eight is hardly enough, yet in Nigeria a sachet, or small plastic pouch, containing two pads are now being widely sold as an affordable option. In richer countries, the sachet may be considered a convenient, portable alternative, but in Nigeria it is seen as something more concerning. The appearance of the sanitary pads in these small packs was "mind-boggling", according to women's health activist Chioma Nwakanma. They do not represent convenience but rather a more difficult choice as some women are…

Here’s the world’s biggest fish hatchery

This is a part of the largest fish-breeding ground yet discovered. It occupies more than 240km2 of the floor of the Weddell Sea, off Antarctica. Each nest is guarded by a notothenioid icefish, usually the father. Altogether, there are about 60m nests, housing more than 100bn eggs. The site was discovered by Autun Purser of the Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, in Bremerhaven, and is reported in Current Biology. Purser saw the first nests on a dive. Further dives revealed more. He and his colleagues then towed cameras over the site to discover its full extent. One reason…
Xavier Long, a 20-year-old man from Alabama, claims he is paid several thousands of dollars per week by men who want him to test their girlfriends’ loyalty. Long has been conducting so-called “loyalty tests” on behalf of men who allegedly ask him to flirt with their female partners via texts to see if they give in to his advances. His tests involve checking whether the client’s partner can be trusted by sliding into their DMs, and reporting back any shady behavior. Apparently, there are a lot of insecure boyfriends out there, as Xavier has seen demand for his unusual service…

Man takes 11 jabs of Covid-19 vaccine

A man in India got jabbed with a Covid-19 vaccine at least eight times last year, a health official said. Brahmdeo Mandal, 65, has claimed that he received 11 doses of the vaccine in Bihar state. The retired postman said the jabs had helped him to get rid of aches and pains and "stay healthy". He claimed he had not suffered any adverse effects. Mondal was finally stopped from taking what he claimed was his 12th jab at a camp last week. A probe is underway to find out how Mr Mandal, who lives with his family in Madhepura district,…
Did you steal a car in 2021? How about taking a bribe? If you did, the IRS (USA Internal Revenue Service) says to make sure you report it on your taxes. Those provisions went viral Monday following a tweet alerting taxpayers to those somewhat surprising requirements to note the value of your ill-gotten gains. "Tax szn is around the corner," read the tweet from @litcapital. "Remember to report your income from illegal activities and stolen property to the IRS." The requirements can be found at IRS.gov amid other missives to report income earned from jobs in the gig economy and…
A New Zealand man allegedly got 10 Covid-19 vaccine doses injected in only one day, after being paid by other people to get the shot on their behalf. New Zealand is on its way to reaching a 90% two-dose vaccination rate before Christmas, but it’s still dealing with a number of citizens who aren’t even considering getting the job. However, remaining unvaccinated means giving up certain liberties that are only reserved to those with vaccination certificates, and many aren’t willing to do that. So, they reportedly try to circumvent the system by paying someone else to get the vaccine on…
A Florida family suspected there were bees behind their shower wall but were shocked when they found 80,000 of them. For years the Graham family heard buzzing behind the wall and at times saw a bee escape from the tiles in their home in St. Petersburg. In October, they decided to call Elisha Bixler, owner of How’s Your Day Honey and professional beekeeper, to see if the bees could be relocated. When Bixler began chiseling at the wall, she found a 7-foot-tall hive. "It was from the floor to the ceiling with at least 80,000 honey bees," Bixler told USA…
Scientists are currently grappling with some of the biggest unsolved questions out there. Here are 7 that they are working on the answers to right now: 1. Dark Matter The distribution of dark matter throughout the Universe as suggested by a numerical simulation. A new study suggest that the effects of dark matter could actually be the result of an discovered form of gravity. Herschel/ESA Planets, stars, galaxies and everything we can see make up less than 5 percent of the total universe. Scientists think 26.8 percent is a substance they call "dark matter." This matter doesn't interact with light…
