There was pandemonium, yesterday, at the Eagle Square, Abuja venue of National May Day celebration, organised by leaders of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and their Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, counterpart, as aggrieved workers disrupted proceedings over absence of President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo. The workers were infuriated that President Buhari had not attended a Workers’ Day celebration since he took over power in 2015 and had not deemed it necessary to send the Vice President to represent him. They expressed angst that the President kept sending the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, to…
South African President Jacob Zuma was jeered by labor unionists and his speech was cancelled after scuffles broke out between his supporters and workers chanting for him to step down at a May Day rally on Monday. Zuma, who is facing calls to resign after a string of scandals, was expected to call for unity between his ruling party, the African National Congress, and labor unions at the event in Bloemfontein but groups in the crowd booed him and clashed with his supporters, preventing him from speaking. All speeches were cancelled by the Congress of South African Trade Unions, the…

Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s Vice-President on Monday described Nigerian jollof rice as “the best in the world”, ending decisively the controversy started by minister of information, Mr Lai Mohammed. While responding to a question by Richard Quest, CNN International business editor, Mohammed was quoted to have said that the Senegalese make the best jollof rice on the continent. Although Quest defended the minister, saying the minister did not hear his question correctly, the incident sparked off unpleasant reactions on social media among a cross-section of Nigerians. According to Quest, the minister thought he was asked to name the origin of…
Strong indications emerged, yesterday, that there may be constitutional crisis over 2017 budget, if National Assembly failed to pass it this week. The 2017 budget process, which has already stretched thin the constitutionally allowed window, may run the government into a shutdown this month. 2016 budget, which has its life (especially the capital expenditure) extended to May 5, 2017, will expire this week, thus placing a huge encumbrance on government spending. The government has never experienced a shut down since the beginning of the Fourth Republic as it had always come out of budget crisis before the constitutionally approved period.…
Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called on the Federal Government to shelve its planned harmonisation of salaries of health workers in the country. The association’s position is contained in a communiqué issued by Dr Mike Ogirima, President of NMA, on Sunday at the end of the 57th Annual General Meeting and Delegate Conference of the association, held in Calabar, from April 24 to 29. It noted although health workers faced many hazards in the discharge of their duties, their output could not be compared to doctors who performed the bulk of the medical services. “There is an attempt to harmonise…
