Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has expressed concerns that states are not coming forth with their counterpart funds to access the annual matching grant to develop their basic education system. The commission said it was particularly concerned that about N110 billion of the intervention funds accessed from UBEC were not utilised by states as of 2021 with the money left in the coffers of State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs). Debt Management Office said on Tuesday that Nigeria’s total public debt stock increased to N41.60tn in the first quarter of 2022 from N39.56tn as of December 2021. This shows an increase of N2.04tn within a period of three months. The public debt stock covers the total domestic and external debt of the Federal Government, state governments and the Federal Capital Territory. Following the perennial power outages currently being experienced across the country; findings have shown that 20 gas power plants are currently under-performing, leading to power generation dropping below 2,000MW. Nigeria has 23 power generating plants with 11,165MW capacity connected to the national grid. Nigeria has shelved plans to raise about $950 million selling overseas bonds, owing to unfavorable market conditions during the time-frame approved for the fund raising, Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed said. Ahmed said in April that the government planned to sell as early as May its second external debt this year to help plug fiscal deficits.
