Russia attacked positions in eastern Ukraine as it tries to encircle Ukrainian forces in the Donbas and fend off a counteroffensive around the city of Izium. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Russia's offensive in Donbas had stalled and Ukraine could win the war, an outcome few military analysts predicted at the outset of the conflict. "Russia's war in Ukraine is not going as Moscow had planned," Stoltenberg told reporters on Sunday. In a strategic blow for Russia, which has long opposed NATO expansion, Finland on Sunday confirmed it would apply to join the Atlantic military alliance. Sweden's ruling Social Democrats…
Sokoto state has declared an immediate 24-hour curfew to quell protests demanding the release of suspects in the killing of Deborah Samuel last week, a statement from the governor's office said. On Thursday, Samuel was beaten and burned by fellow students for alleged blasphemous statements about the Prophet Mohammad in a Whatsapp group. Two suspects were arrested. The curfew applies to the state capital Sokoto. Nigeria is almost evenly divided between the largely Christian south and mainly Muslim north, where some states have adopted strict sharia laws, including death sentences for blasphemy. A city resident witness described the protesters as…
Kaduna government has banned protests related to religious activity in the state. Samuel Aruwan, commissioner for internal security, said the ban became imperative “in view of moves by some unpatriotic elements to organise series of for-and-against protests related to a security development in one of the northern states”. The ban comes in the wake of unrest in Sokoto state over the arrest of the suspected killers of Deborah Samuel, a female student of Shehu Shagari College of Education. A mob killed Deborah over alleged blasphemy on Thursday. Her killing had sparked outrage and condemnation across the country, with Nigerians asking…
Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, has visited the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. The governor quoted the IPOB leader as saying that he would preach peace when released. Soludo made this known in a post on his Facebook page Saturday night after visiting the IPOB leader. He posted, “I visited Nnamdi Kanu, yesterday, (Friday, 13th May, 2022) to felicitate with him and also as part of the wider consultations with critical stakeholders in search of lasting peace and security in the Southeast. “He was in very high spirits and we had quality and frank…

IPOB declares May 18, 26 sit-at-home

Indigenous People of Biafra has declared May 18 and 26, 2022 as sit-at-home for the people of the Southeast. The group said it declared the sit-at-home, being the court dates of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu as part of solidarity. In a statement on Saturday, the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, also dissociated itself from a voice note purportedly announcing different dates, saying that any other date is not from IPOB. Powerful noted that the group’s core mandate is the well-being of Biafrans all over the globe, with emphasis on the homeland of Biafra. He said the IPOB…

Ukrainian forces have launched a counteroffensive near the Russian-held town of Izium in eastern Ukraine, a regional governor said on Saturday, in what could prove a serious setback for Moscow's plans to capture the entire Donbas region. Russian forces have focused much of their firepower on the Donbas in a "second phase" of their invasion that was announced on April 19, after they failed to reach the capital Kyiv from the north in the early weeks of the war. But Ukraine has been retaking territory in its northeast, driving the Russians away from the second-largest Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Keeping…

UAE President Sheikh Khalifa is dead

One of the richest monarchs in the world, President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates, has died at the age of 73. Sheikh Khalifa was president of the UAE since 2004, but his role had been largely ceremonial since he suffered a stroke in 2014. His half-brother, Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, is now in charge of state affairs. The al-Nahyan family is believed to have a fortune of $150bn (£123bn). As well as being president of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa was also the ruler of Abu Dhabi, the oil-rich capital of the seven emirates which comprise…
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said although Ukrainians are doing everything they can to drive out the Russians, “no one today can predict how long this war will last.” “This will depend, unfortunately, not only on our people, who are already giving their maximum,” he said in his nightly video address to the nation. “This will depend on our partners, on European countries, on the entire free world.” He said he was thankful to all those who are working to strengthen the sanctions on Russia and increase military and financial support to Ukraine. “This is the only recipe for protecting freedom in…
Finland’s Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto urged patience on Friday and called for a step-by-step approach in response to Turkish resistance to Finnish and Swedish NATO membership. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan earlier said NATO member Turkey could not support Finnish and Swedish plans to join the alliance, erecting a potential stumbling block as membership requires unanimous backing from all 30 member states. “We need some patience in this type of process, it’s not happening in one day ... Let’s take issues step-by-step,” Haavisto told reporters. Erdogan’s statement appeared to come as a surprise to Finland after Haavisto had visited Turkey twice…
