PRESS RELEASE In what appears to be a landmark economic decision of the Bola Tinubu-led administration, the Federal Government last year, precisely on August 16, 2023 through the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) secured a $3.3 billion emergency crude repayment loan, which according to the NNPC, was to help give support to the Naira and stabilize the Foreign Exchange market. The curious thing about this transaction is that up till now, the Federal Government continues to keep mum about it, and the only information available to the public on the mega deal is coming only through unofficial sources from the…
Northern Senators Forum (NSF) has condemned the relocation of some departments in the Central Bank of Nigeria and the headquarters of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) from Abuja to Lagos State. The senators called on the federal government to consider reversal of the relocated departments or ready to face legal actions. Suleiman Kawu, spokesperson of NSF, made the call in a statement on Monday. The CBN in an internal memo last week announced plans to transfer some of its departments to Lagos on the ground that its headquarters in Abuja is congested with staff. Similarly, the Minister of…
The 16 members of the Plateau house of assembly sacked by the court of appeal have resolved to resume legislative duties on Tuesday (today). In November 2023, the legislators who were elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were sacked by the appeal court over a lack of party structure. The election of Caleb Mutfwang, governor of the state, was also nullified by the court for the same reason. However, Mutfwang’s sack was reversed by the supreme court on January 12. The apex court had ruled that the appeal court erred in its judgment. Speaking to journalists…
Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has kicked against plans by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to relocate their offices to Lagos. The ACF, in a statement yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Tukur Muhammad-Baba, described the plans as a ploy to further under-develop northern Nigeria. The CBN had, in a circular issued on January 13, notified its staff about the plan to transfer its key operational directorates to Lagos to “decongest” its headquarters. “This initiative aims to ensure compliance with building safety standards and enhance the efficient utilisation of our office space.…
A group of youths took to the streets on Friday to protest the verdict affirming Abdullahi Sule as governor of Nasarawa state. Channels Television reported that the protesters burnt tyres at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Lafia, capital of Nasarawa state. They also erected bonfires and blocked a highway that empties into Jos, the Plateau state capital. The activities of the protesters led to the abrupt closure of schools and businesses in Lafia, a town conterminous with the federal capital territory (FCT). Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT) and Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers state, have agreed to end the political feud between them. According to the resolutions reached at the end of a meeting held with President Bola Tinubu at the State House of Monday, all parties to the crisis in Rivers have agreed that all matters instituted in courts should “immediately” be withdrawn. In the eight-point resolution signed by Fubara, Wike, and other Rivers stakeholders, it was agreed that all impeachment proceedings against the governor should be dropped “immediately”. They also agreed that Martin Amaewhule should be…
Rivers State Government has attributed the demolition of the House of Assembly complex to structural defects arising from explosion and fire outbreak. Joseph Johnson, the state’s commissioner for Information, said this in a statement on Wednesday in Port Harcourt. Johnson said that the incident rendered the building unfit for human use, saying that there were visible cracks on the walls and the entire structure looked frail and unsafe for legislative business. He said that professional advice was sought on the integrity of the building, after Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s inspection visit to determine the level of damage. “After the assessment of…
James Oliphant He has been impeached twice, tried to thwart the peaceful transfer of power after losing the 2020 presidential election, faces scores of charges in multiple criminal cases, and his critics warn he is plotting to rule as an autocrat. Yet, Donald Trump could still return to the White House. Trump leads his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination by nearly 50 percentage points in national opinion polls, a remarkable comeback for a one-term president who three years ago appeared vanquished and humiliated. Here are four reasons why Trump could win the November 2024 electionagainst Democratic incumbent Joe Biden:…
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the seats of the 27 lawmakers at the River House Assembly vacant, for defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The PDP said this in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, in Abuja on Monday. Ologunagba said that by leaving the PDP, on which platform they were elected, their seats had become vacant. He said this was by virtue of the provision of Section 109 (1) (g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). “For the avoidance of…
