Opinion

The God of the holy scriptures does not conform to human expectations of goodness. A good man does not tell his son to marry a prostitute, as God did with Hosea (Hosea 1:2). A good man does not instruct his servant to walk around without their trousers for three years, as God did with Isaiah (Isaiah 20:2-4). A good man does not put diseases on people (Exodus 15:26). A good man does not kill off millions of his children over 40 years in the wilderness, as God did to Israel. If Jesus were a good man as men call goodness,…
During the first few days of class, my students are silent and nervous. They are college first-years and the class is English Composition. My job is to teach them to communicate effectively through writing. They file in anxiously and choose their seats. The majority are White and have come from suburbs around Pittsburgh, north New Jersey and Philadelphia. Most are away from home for the very first time. I try to look the part of an English professor in shirt, tie and jacket with jeans. Professional but not too fussy. This is an insecurity on my part. Many of my…
I am a radio host. Jonathan Ugbal and I host a weekly political talk show, "The Dialogue With Agba Jalingo" on Hit 95.9fm, in the ancient city of Calabar. The program airs every Sunday 6-7pm, and can be joined by listeners from anywhere. The implication of Thursday’s invitation of Channels TV anchors who interviewed Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state and Commodore Kunle Olawunmi, by the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is that, each time I am on air and I ask my guest a question, I must also censor or determine what the guest should say, else I’ll be punished…
Last week, while the eyes of the world were on Afghanistan, a fellow in one of Nigeria’s most tradition-bound states attempted the royal equivalent of a military coup. The leader of the Shua Arab in Edo, Idris Adanno, in a curious, latter-day rediscovery of his linguistic and cultural identity, arranged for his own coronation as the “Sultan” of the Shua Arab in Edo. It was a sign of displeasure, if not rebellion, against the current practice of lumping together all leaders of Hausa communities as “Sarkin.”When the epistemology of northern traditional institutions would be written, however, it will be recorded that…
This is not the best of times in Nigeria. Many families are in financial mess as the means to meeting the basic needs: feeding, rent, medicals and children's school fees, are getting harder by the day. It is not funny at all. Families are caught in the webs of threatening hunger, worsening insecurity and ravaging health challenges as posed by Covid-19 and cholera. More than Covid-19, cholera has claimed far more lives in the last few months. A total of 816 deaths have been recorded in Nigeria due to cholera outbreak since the beginning of the year. This is according…
I felt the compelling need to allow my friend, Babafemi Badejo, Professor of Political Science/International Relations at Chrisland University, Abeokuta, join issues with Jeffrey Sachs on the recommendation that the African Union be made the 21st member of the G-20 economically-powerful nations of the world. Of what benefit will such membership be to the marginalised, oppressed, and long-suffering African people, argues Badejo: “The United Nations held a pre-Summit on Food Systems on July 26-28, 2021 as a primer for its first Global Food Summit coming up in September 2021. At this meeting, Jeffrey Sachs, American and popular economist as well…
On Tuesday, the foremost military school, Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna, was attacked by supposed bandits. The media reported that those attackers killed two officers, abducted one, demanded a ransom of N200m for his release. Officially, he is still considered missing. Other details are still sketchy for now, but it seems that the attack occurred at midnight while people were asleep and while the CCTV cameras were left un-surveilled by officers who had probably fallen asleep too. The perpetrators reportedly made their way into the NDA premises camouflaged in military fatigues, overpowered the guards, and headed for the officers’ quarters.…

Masari’s call to arms - Kayode Komolafe

In fewer than 24 hours that Governor Aminu Masari justified his call on the people of Katsina state to take up arms in self-defence, some “unknown gunmen” attacked the Nigerian Defence Academy in the neighbouring Kaduna state yesterday, killing two officers and abducting another in the tragic event. It was as if the attackers were responding to the Masari proposition which had generated mixed reactions. In fact, a controversy of sorts was already brewing over Masari’s statement before the attack. But while the reactions to Masari had been in words, the seeming response embodied in the attack on the Defence…

Buhari: How not to fail - Festus Adedayo

President Muhammadu Buhari made one of the most down-to-earth statements of his presidency last Thursday, though by proxy. After meeting Nigerian security chiefs at the Aso Rock Villa, the National Security Adviser, (NSA) Babagana Monguno, claimed Buhari said that he dreaded failure in office, so much; and I dare literalize it, like leprosy. “And (President Buhari) also made it very, very (italics, mine) clear that he’s not ready to exit government as a failure,” Monguno said. It was an opportunity for Monguno to thump the Buhari government’s chest. President Buhari, said Monguno, is very happy about the “tremendous success” he…
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee ..... (Isaiah 41:10). Introduction Times come in life when we find ourselves in situations of great fear, times of serious challenges and potent threats that bring uncommon confusion even to brave men and intrepid explorers. However, we must never allow fear to define our lives as some people do, who are so afraid to die that they never truly live. In reality, most times, fear is a thoughtless response to…
