Even when its blood-sucking soldiers slash the throats of captured Nigerians in audacious video recordings that periodically go viral on the social media, the truth is that Boko Haram, that deadly terrorist group, has left the consciousness of many Nigerians, especially the political elite. For example, as that eight year-old boy insurgent horrendously gorged out the last pint of blood in the veins of Daciya Dalep, the Langtang student of the University of Maiduguri who was abducted on January 9 as he returned to his University of Maiduguri school, President Muhammadu Buhari was apparently busy battling a mound of Tuwo…

Baba Lekki blasts Balarabe - Tatalo Alamu

The grand re-entry of Mama Igosun to the household has set a cat among Okon’s domestic pigeons. It was akin to the arrival of a big cat among a pack of antelopes. Things were no longer at ease as the old girl often strolled into the kitchen to dislodge Okon from his stronghold with a torrent of curses and choleric abuses. The complaints about Okon’s culinary skills or lack of them have been legion with the ancient girl droning and drooling endlessly like a stranded fairy. “If I come know say na dis gbarogudu beans you wan give me make…
Let me begin by saying that the term “idealist” is not used in this article in the philosophical sense. Were this the case departed comrades to whom the piece is dedicated would not be considered as Marxists at all. But they were all revolutionary Marxists. I employ the term “idealist” here in the ordinary sense of a person that “cherishes or pursues high or noble principles, purposes or goals” but without giving sufficient consideration to objective, historically-determined reality. When this description is applied to departed Nigerian revolutionary Marxists you begin to have a picture of the type of persons I…
It is not too surprising that the Amotekun security initiatives of the South-West is creating a flurry in many quarters. Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami sees it as a challenge to the exclusive powers of the Federal Government as far as security is concerned. The irony is lost on Malami, a lawyer of great education but limited understanding, that it is the consistent failure of his masters that made the case for Amotekun and similar outfits in the federation so compelling. Governors of the Yoruba heartland have not shied away from defending their position. Governor Kayode Fayemi of…
‘Nobody likes him,’ rages in a new documentary film. ‘Nobody wants to work with him. He gets nothing done.’ She expanded on her vicious personal attack in an interview with: ‘It’s not only him, it’s the culture around him. It’s his leadership team. It’s his prominent supporters….and their relentless attacks on lots of his competitors, particularly the women.’ She concluded: ‘I think people need to pay attention because we want, hopefully, to elect a president who’s going to try to bring us together and not either turn a blind eye, or actually reward the kind of insulting, attacking, degrading behavior…
The news of the murder of chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Lawan Andimi, is unfortunate. Andimi had been abducted earlier in the month when Boko Haram insurgents attacked his village. Days later, he appeared in a video clip where he appealed to his state governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, to rescue him. It is painful that he was killed eventually. Multiple Christian organisations, both locally and internationally, are reporting the incident of Andimi’s death as part of the growing evidence of Christian persecution in Nigeria and also construing his death as a martyrdom.…
The assumption of isolated individuals transacting in free markets has underpinned highly damaging economic policies since the 1980s. Given the interdependent nature of the digital world, economic researchers need to ditch their unscientific attachment to this paradigm and instead focus on the economy of the 2020s. The 2020s will be the decade when the idea that economic problems can be “left to the market” to solve is finally put to rest – after some 40 years during which that belief has caused untold damage to society and the environment. We can foretell this with such confidence because of the nature…
Tonnie Iredia It is no longer news that in line with last week’s decision of the Supreme Court, Senator Hope Uzodinma is now the Imo State governor. Having decided that the exclusion of certain votes in his favour during the collation of votes at the last governorship election in the state was illegal, the Apex Court went ahead to add the said votes which saw to the victory of the new governor. Uzodinma was promptly sworn in. His immediate predecessor, Emeka Ihedioha who had earlier been declared as the duly elected governor by the electoral body had to step down.…
“There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come” – Victor Hugo in “Les Miserables” “Les Miserables” is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo first published in 1862. Set in the early C19th France, it is the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his desire for redemption after serving 19 years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child. The literal meaning of “Les Miserables” is “the miserable ones” Valjean, the lead character, finally was released from prison, died a noble and his life was celebrated as he…
Apparently a young officer of the Nigerian Army at the time Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was the Nigerian Prime Minister from 1957 – 1966, it goes without saying that President Muhammadu Buhari must know of Balewa, even if he didn’t know him. Conversely however, if his official birthday of April 17, 1967 is indeed real, Abubakar Malami probably encountered Balewa as a historical piece. For both however, the life of Balewa and his disposition to Western Nigeria, especially during the crisis that seized the region from 1962 to 1966, should be a reference point if both men do not want the…
