The Buharist cyber bullies - Farooq Kperogi

There is a troubling cyberbullying epidemic sweeping through Muslim northern Nigeria that must be frontally confronted and tackled. I get hundreds of private messages here on Facebook every week from northern Nigerian Muslims thanking me for being their “voice” because they can’t say the things I say about the deleterious effects of Buhari’s policies on them. They wonder how I, a northern Muslim who has access to officials of this government, can risk telling the truth without fear of smears. They tell me they are called “infidels,” “sympathizers of infidels,” “traitors,” and such other terrible epithets for merely daring to…
I love this country with every fiber of my being. For three generations before me my forefathers, including my great grandfather, my grandfather and my father, have made solid and notable contributions to the developmemt of this country in both the private and public sectors. My great grandfather, Rev. Emmanuel Adebiyi Kayode, studied theology at the great Fourah Bay College in Freetown, Sierra Leonne and Durham University in the United Kingdom after which he returned to Nigeria. He was ordained as an Anglican priest, was the first Nigerian to take Christianity to our hometown Ile-Ife and was the first to…
This piece was motivated by the apparently growing disillusionment with the Buhari government, especially on his handling of the economy. Many people, including some of the passionate Buharists, seem to have given up hope that the President would be the expected political messiah who would lead the country to the Promised Land. There are several signs of this disillusionment: the camp of the ‘wailing wailers’ appears to be growing and I receive far less threats and insults from ardent Buharists than I did a year ago whenever I disagreed with the government’s policy options. There are also empirical data on…

Tales of the unexpected - Olusegun Adeniyi

SCENE ONE: In the course of a break-in at a local branch of the Central Bank (not in Nigeria), one of the robbers, holding a pump action gun in his hands, shouted to everyone: “Don’t move, if you don’t want to die. The money in this bank belongs to the government while your life belongs to you.” With that message, everyone in the banking hall laid down quietly. That is called “Mind Changing Concept”. That is a lesson that will serve the people of Rivers State where the rerun legislative elections were conducted last weekend amid reports of beheading of…
A monopoly that many Nigerians have struggled to understand or entrepreneurs have battled to break is that of DSTV. It has, so far, defied nearly all competitions to dominate the PayTv industry in Nigeria. We can all recall how HiTV made a cameo attempt at shattering the monopoly. HiTV came like a thief in night, wrestle the rights to broadcast not only the English Premier League (EPL), which has a fanatical following in Nigeria, but also, the English FA, the UEFA champions League, and Europa Cup but in the morning; HiTv crashed. HiTv which signed to air these matches for…
It is now clear that the word ‘clueless’ frequently used to denigrate former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration by the All Progressives Congress cannot be more valid than now. Part of the propaganda the All Progressives Congress (APC) used as an opposition party to unseat President Goodluck Jonathan from power in the run-up to the 2015 presidential election was to constantly describe him and his administration as “clueless” in the way governmental affairs were run. At every forum before the election, the party through its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed and its National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun fondly used the word ‘clueless’…

The Yahya Jammeh problem - Reuben Abati

When President Yahya Jammeh of The Gambia conceded defeat after the December 1, Presidential elections in that West African country of 1.9 million people, the gesture was widely hailed and described as an indication of great hope for democracy in Africa and particularly for The Gambia, which Jammeh had ruled with an iron fist for 22 years. That election was also perhaps the most important political development in The Gambia in 52 years - the first change of government through democratic elections. The winner of the Presidential election, Adama Barrow, was the product of a coalition of opposition parties who…
There must be something Asiwaju Bola Tinubu knows or does that is beyond other politicians; for he is the only politician since 1999 that sponsors people into political offices and they remain faithful and loyal to him. In the three zones of the North as well as in the South-East and South-South, sometimes the relationship between a political godfather and a godson does not even last until the inauguration before turning sour. But in Tinubu’s case, no matter the attacks the public may heap on him about his political and financial stranglehold on his godsons’ tenures, they still remain loyal…

"Everything Was Forever Until It Was No More." (- Alexi Yurchak, Author, 2006) "Things fall apart, the center cannot hold." (- W.B. Yeats, Poet, 1919) Exactly 25 years ago, in December 1991, I was a young TV producer/reporter/news anchor of a global newscast, CBN World News. At the time, something was afoot in the firmament of global politics. History was being made. What had once seemed permanent, was crumbling before our eyes. The great Soviet Union, the world's second largest superpower, was disintegrating from within at hyper speed. Four months earlier, Mikhail Gorbachev, the reformist President of the USSR had…
