Federal Government is currently reviewing concerns around customs duty on electricity meters in order to make the equipment more accessible to power consumers.

This followed complaints by power distribution companies over the cost of duty on meters, a development that had made many meters remain un-cleared at the ports.

Managing Director, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Mr Ernest Mupwaya, disclosed this while hosting Minister of State for Power, Mr Goddy Jedy-Agba, who inspected facilities at the headquarters of the Disco in Abuja on Thursday.

Mupwaya said, “There have been discussions between Discos and government about the issue of meters and the metering of customers.

“I am glad to inform you that the government is working now to resolve this issue so that meters can be available.”

AEDC used the opportunity of the minister’s visit to urge  Federal Government to intervene in the matter of customs duty on meters.

Mupwaya told journalists after the closed-door meeting that concerns around the non-payment of electricity bills by ministries, departments and agencies were also brought before Jedy-Agba.

On his part, the power minister told journalists that the concerns raised by Disco were similar to issues confronting other electricity distributors across the country.

He said the government would look into the issues, noting that there was no plan to dismantle the Discos.
