The country’s electricity grid has lost 1,062 megawatts (mw) to various constraints of gas supply shortage and turbine faults, checks on the power sector reveals.

The grid which had peak power generation of 4,160mw on January 1, 2017 dropped to 3,432mw last week, and further declined to 3,098mw on Sunday, causing a total loss of 1,062mw.

Information obtained from the Nigeria System Operator (NSO) said the lowest generation was around 2,700mw. Some customers in Abuja said power supply has declined as those who use to have about 18 hours supply are now having less than 11 hours supply daily.

Sources from the generation section said the reduced supply of gas to the 23 Generation Companies (GenCos) is partly responsible for the drastic decline in electricity generation. Other issues officials said is the breakdown of one or two turbines which are being revamped.
