Global stocks and oil prices fell again Tuesday after a brief respite from the heavy sell-off triggered by the emergence of the Omicron coronavirus variant. Stocks in Asia Pacific and Europe slid, while Wall Street opened weaker. Oil prices fell about 3% as more countries reported cases of the variant and imposed new travel restrictions. The mood was also dampened by a warning from Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel that current vaccines will struggle with Omicron. "There is no world, I think, where [the effectiveness] is the same level . . . we had with [the] Delta [variant]," Bancel said in…
The Omicron coronavirus variant kicked oil prices lower late last week and has sapped refining margins, but with crude futures rallying on Monday, the impact could be limited. Governments worldwide have imposed curbs on travellers to try limit the spread of Omicron, first detected in southern Africa, as scientists race to determine the level of risk. Oil prices plunged more than 10% on Friday - their largest daily drop since April 2020 - but recovered some of those losses on Monday, standing up nearly 5% on the day. Analysts said the Friday sell-off had been excessive. , Refining margins fell…
For more than 35 years, psychology professor Robert Cialdini has been studying the science of persuasion to figure out what makes people say “yes.” He put much of what he’s learned in his 1984 best-seller, “Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion.” Now, newly revised, Cialdini has added some more recent persuasion tricks to the book. One of those is creating a “we group” mentality. The key to creating a “we group” is to make the person you want to influence feel the two of you are part of the same group, says Cialdini. “People are inclined to say yes to someone…
Salespeople have used psychological principles to increase their sales, as well as customer satisfaction, for decades. Yet when it comes to entrepreneurs who want to build their businesses, they're far more likely to pick up a book on product development or marketing than they are on psychology. But why aren't more entrepreneurs including psychology in their research when it could significantly help their business? One serial entrepreneur, Ryan Hornby (founder of a technology start-up, based in Belfast, Northern Ireland), is working to change this. He's studied psychology extensively as he's grown his businesses, which include IAM, a model and creative…
The naira weakened further against the dollar at the parallel market on Wednesday to trade at N560 per dollar. The figure is N15 or 2.8 percent lower than the N545 it traded last week. Street traders across forex markets in Lagos who spoke to our correspondent on Wednesday quoted the naira at N560 to a dollar. They said that the naira has continued to fall rapidly against the greenback over the past week. A parallel market (street market) is characterised by non-compliant behaviour with an institutional set of rules. Meanwhile, the currency which opened trading at an indicative price of…
True leadership requires courage -- a willingness to peel back the onion and own your uglier layers. To lead with emotional courage takes self-awareness, an essential trait for any leader. It also may be the most important skill to master, if you call yourself a leader. With self-awareness, you can probe your emotions in any given situation to understand what you're feeling and why. This is key for understanding how to appropriately respond, rather than impulsively react to a situation going south. It's also key to leading with your own emotional courage. Before you do, I suggest enlisting other people…
The Oracle of Omaha drops what may be the best career advice you'll get today. Billionaire Warren Buffett, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, learned a long time ago that the greatest commodity of all is time. That's why he is religiously protective of his own time by setting strict boundaries for himself. This leads to a "Buffett-ism" that has garnered a lot of debate over the years since he said it. It's a quote about the difference between successful people and really successful people. The mega-mogul said: The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really…

Rice farmers in Dakasoye settlement of Garun Malam local government area of Kano State have said they recorded bumper harvest despite the shortage of rain in the 2021 season. Speaking with our correspondent at Garun Malam, they said this was made possible through their use of improved seedlings. The farmers said the seedlings had boosted their production by about 25 per cent. Iliyasu Garba said he was among the few farmers that resisted the improved seedlings when it was introduced to them through Kano Rural Development Authority (KNARDA). Garba explained that following massive awareness and training, he decided to try…
Patrick Winston knew how to speak. But his even greater skill was getting others to listen. Earlier this year, I came across a lecture by former MIT professor Patrick Winston called "How to Speak." The lecture was posted on YouTube a few months after Winston's death in 2019, and has since been viewed over 4.7 million times. Winston, who taught at MIT for almost 50 years and was one of the school's most beloved professors, knew how to captivate an audience. His style isn't flashy, but it is extremely compelling--even more noteworthy when you consider he worked in the technical…
