A government official says a meningitis strain new to the West African nation has killed 282 people and infected nearly 2,000 amid a shortage of vaccines. Chikwe Ihekweazu is in charge of Nigeria Center for Disease Control. He says efforts to curb the meningitis C outbreak are hampered by a worldwide shortage of vaccine. He told journalists Thursday that World Health Organization has delivered 500,000 doses of vaccine but estimates 3 million are needed just in Zamfara, the worst-hit of 15 states in north and central Nigeria. Ihekweazu says most victims are children aged 5 to 14. The strain inflames…
Hundreds of children remain missing while officials refuse to acknowledge the largest-ever mass abduction of Nigerian schoolchildren by Boko Haram Islamic extremists, Human Rights Watch said Thursday. Boko Haram kidnapped hundreds of children in the northeastern town of Damasak on Nov. 24, 2014, the New York-based organization said in a dispatch from researcher Mausi Segun. She quoted traditional leaders as saying they submitted a list of 501 missing children to police and local government officials in April 2015, when the town was briefly freed from Boko Haram, but have never received a response. International outrage met the separate April 2014…

Seventeen people have been arrested after a protest at Stansted Airport in Essex temporarily halted take-offs and landings on Tuesday. Police were called at 21:30 BST as a group entered a non-commercial runway and locked themselves in an aircraft. Those involved were trying to stop a charter flight which they claim was due to deport people to Nigeria and Ghana. In total, 23 incoming flights were diverted to other airports, including scheduled arrivals from Naples, Cologne, Glasgow, Riga, Belfast and Bilbao. The…

The minister, who briefed State House correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari, was reacting to calls for the President to tell Nigerians amount spent on his medical treatment abroad.…

Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), says the Senate lacks the power to summon him.
