United States fired a barrage of cruise missiles into Syria Thursday night in retaliation for this week's gruesome chemical weapons attack against civilians, U.S. officials said. It was the first direct American assault on the Syrian government and Donald Trump's most dramatic military order since becoming president. The surprise strike marked a striking reversal for Trump, who warned as a candidate against the U.S. getting pulled into the Syrian civil war, now in its seventh year. But the president appeared moved by the photos of children killed in the chemical attack, calling it a "disgrace to humanity" that crossed "a…
Rodrigo Duterte faced criticism for defending adultery by his political ally Duterte defended House of Representatives Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez's affairs He said, 'This is a world of hypocrisy. Who among you does not have a mistress?' Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has met a furious backlash after defending adultery by a powerful political ally. Duterte said that like himself, House of Representatives Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez - who has made public his extramarital affairs - had 'many wives'. Describing it as a 'non-issue', the President said in a speech on Tuesday night: 'This is a world of hypocrisy. Who among you here…
President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday assured Nigerians that his administration would approach the nation’s economic challenges with the same commitment it had put into fighting corruption and terrorism. Buhari made the promise while launching the country’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan 2017-2020 at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. While saying his administration inherited numerous challenges, the President recalled that his political campaign was based on a recognition of the difficult situation Nigeria was in and the need to bring positive and enduring change. He said he remained committed to his electoral promise to change the way of doing things and change…
Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi ll, on Wednesday, faulted the present administration’s economic model, saying it would not work. Sanusi, who spoke at Kaduna State Economic Summit in Kaduna, the state capital, also berated northern leaders, saying the North-West and the North-East remained the poorest parts of the world. The monarch, who spoke on the theme ‘Promoting investments in the midst of economic challenges’, said the North, as a region, constituted the highest of the nation’s population, but lacked the necessary indices for progress. Sanusi, a former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, said the Federal Government was borrowing unsustainably.…
Professor Pat Utomi has chided Buhari administration for the state of the economy, saying it lacks the capacity for effective budget planning. He spoke in Awka, Anambra State capital, on Wednesday, as guest lecturer at Emmanuel Egbogah Budget Roundtable organised by the Business School of Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Utomi said the fall in oil prices did not cause Nigeria’s current economic recession as the Buhari administration claims. According to him, Buhari government failed to preempt and predict the coming economic situation. He argues that if the government had been futuristic in budget planning and management of resources, it would have…
Ten months after the federal government launched the clean-up of Ogoniland, actual work is yet to commence in the community, Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria, ERA/FoEN, has said. Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, in June 2016 flagged off the oil spillage clean-up exercise amidst an elaborate ceremony in Bodo, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State. Godwin Ojo, Executive Director of ERA/FoEN, said almost six years after the UNEP report, “not a drop of oil” had been cleaned in Ogoniland. “As we speak, there has been no serious effort to manage expectations of the Ogonis. While some believe that…
The Department of State warns U.S. citizens of the risks of travel to Nigeria and recommends that U.S. citizens avoid all but essential travel to Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kano, and Yobe states because the security situation in northeast Nigeria remains fluid and unpredictable. Very poor transportation infrastructure also makes it difficult for the U.S. Mission to provide consular services in these states. All U.S. citizens should have evacuation plans that do not solely rely on U.S. government assistance. Due to the risk of kidnappings, robberies, and other armed attacks, U.S. citizens should also avoid all but essential travel to:…
The grief-stricken father cradled his 9-month-old twins, Aya and Ahmed, each in the crook of an arm. Stroking their hair, he choked back tears, mumbling, "Say goodbye, baby, say goodbye" to their lifeless bodies. Then Abdel Hameed Alyousef took them to a mass grave where 22 members of his family were being buried. Each branch of the clan got its own trench. More than 80 people, including at least 30 children and 20 women, were killed in the chemical attack on the Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun early Tuesday, and the toll could still rise. The Alyousef family, one of…
U.S. President Donald Trump accused Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government of going "beyond a red line" with a poison gas attack on civilians and said his attitude towards Syria and Assad had changed, but gave no indication of how he would respond. Trump said the attack, which killed at least 70 people, many of them children, "crosses many, many lines", an allusion to his predecessor Barack Obama's threat to topple Assad with air strikes if he used such weapons. His accusations against Assad put him directly at odds with Moscow, the Syrian's president principal backer. "I will tell you, what…
