Barely six months to the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, the Federal Government’s total debts and other financial liabilities have reached N71.46 trillion. The figure does not include undocumented contingent liabilities to university lecturers, public school teachers and other public employees to whom government is indebted. Analysts say these undocumented liabilities could run into several trillions. The figures also exclude other pending financial liabilities to non-lending bilateral and multilateral institutions. International Monetary Fund has revised Nigeria's 2022 real GDP growth forecast down to 3% from 3.4% earlier, citing weak oil production and the adverse effects of recent flooding. The United States Department of Justice said it has transferred over $20.6m to the Federal Government in accordance with an August 23 agreement between the governments to repatriate assets stolen by late dictator, Sani Abacha, and his co-conspirators. According to a statement published on the DoJ’s website on Thursday, the repatriation brings the total amount forfeited and returned by the US in this case to approximately $332.4m. In 2020, the department repatriated over $311.7m of the forfeited assets that had been located in the Bailiwick of Jersey.
