Millions of children in the Middle East will become poorer as their caregivers lose jobs from lockdowns aimed at stemming the spread of coronavirus across the region, according to the U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF). UNICEF said children were nearly half of an estimated eight million people who will be hurt by the loss of about 1.7 million jobs this year as a result of businesses closing, salaries being suspended and other effects of lockdowns in the region. “It is evident that the pandemic is affecting children firsthand. Many families in the region are already becoming poorer due to the loss…

Apparently dissatisfied with the role played by Rives State Police Command in the arrest of the workers, Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, on Friday removed Rivers Commissioner of Police, Mr Dandaura Mustapha, and replaced him with Mr Gobum Mukan, who was asked to…

Days before the holy fasting month of Ramadan begins, the Islamic world is grappling with an untimely paradox of the new coronavirus pandemic: enforced separation at a time when socialising is almost sacred. The holiest month in the Islamic calendar is one of family and togetherness – community, reflection, charity and prayer. But with shuttered mosques, coronavirus curfews and bans on mass prayers from Senegal to Southeast Asia, some 1.8 billion Muslims are facing a Ramadan like never before. Across the Muslim world the pandemic has generated new levels of anxiety ahead of the holy fasting month, which begins on…

According to a statement signed by Commissioner for Information, Mr Muhammad Garba, the commissioner was removed following his unguarded utterances against the person of the late Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Abba Kyari. He said as a public servant, the commissioner ought to have respected the office by refraining from any act capable of rendering it to disrepute. “The action of a public servant, personal or otherwise reflects back on the government and therefore, the Ganduje administration…
President Donald Trump has attacked China once again over the coronavirus pandemic - questioning whether it was a "mistake that got out of control" or a crisis that was started deliberately. At the daily White House briefing, the US president warned that Beijing would face consequences if it was "knowingly responsible" for the spread of COVID-19, but he stopped short of saying what type of actions he might take. "It could have been stopped in China before it started and it wasn't, and the whole world is suffering from it," Trump told reporters on Saturday. The president has ramped up…
