President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday commended the European Union (EU) for donating 50 million Euros (N21 billion) towards containing the novel coronavirus in Nigeria. Receiving the EU delegation, led by its Ambassador, Mr Ketil Karlsen in Abuja, he noted that the gesture would immensely revitalise the nation’s healthcare systems. He expressed the condolences of the government and people of Nigeria to EU-member countries and families who lost their loved ones to the epidemic. ‘’Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and communities impacted. We are confident from history that the resilience of Europe and our global collective will enable…
International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected that Nigeria’s economy will recede by 3.4 per cent in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has disrupted global supply chains. “This would be the worst recession in 30 years, and the second recession in five years, following closely after a negative economic growth of 1.51 per cent in 2016,” the IMF said. In 1987, Nigeria’s economy receded by -10.87 and -0.6 in 1991. The Fund stated this in its April 2020 World Economic Outlook report released, yesterday, in Washington DC, USA. IMF Chief Economist and Director of Research Department, Gita Gopinath, said…
Federal Government says funds donated by the private sector towards fighting coronavirus are meant for development of healthcare infrastructure and cannot be used to provide palliatives during lockdown. Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed, said this yesterday when he featured on a Radio Nigeria programme, “Politics Nationwide”. He was responding to comments from Nigerians requesting that part of the billions of naira being donated by public-spirited individuals and private institutions should be shared to the people to cushion the effect of the extended lockdown. The minister said the Presidential Task Force for the Control of Coronavirus was neither…

Buhari, Lawan, Gbajabiamila meet in Aso Rock

Senate President Ahmed Lawan, and Speaker House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila, on Tuesday, met with President Muhammadu Buhari behind closed doors to discuss the implementation of the National Social Investment Programme, among other issues. This comes days after a clash between the National Assembly and Special Adviser to the President on Social Investment Programme, Ms Maryam Uwais, over the need for a reform of the process of implementing the programme. Uwais had, on April 8, responded to criticisms of the programme by the legislature with allegations that lawmakers were criticising the implementation of the SIP partly because some of them…

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Mr Akin Abayomi, said a total of 119 people with COVID-19 symptoms have been identified in the state. Abayomi, at a briefing of Tuesday, said a total of 118,000 households had been reached in the search of possible COVID-19 cases in communities, adding that the search was activated to limit the spread of the disease in the state which had the highest number of COVID-19 patients in the country. "We’ve embarked on an active case search in communities. The idea is to go to hotspots and go from door to door with our health personnel.…
U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday halted funding to the World Health Organization over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic, drawing condemnation from infectious disease experts as the global death toll continued to mount. Trump, who has reacted angrily to criticism of his administration’s response to the worst epidemic in a century, has become increasingly hostile towards the WHO. The Geneva-based organisation had promoted China’s “disinformation” about the virus that likely led to a wider outbreak than otherwise would have occurred, Trump said. “The WHO failed in this basic duty and must be held accountable,” Trump told a White House…
Federal government has extended lockdowns in Lagos, Abuja and Ogun states for an additional 14 days to combat the new coronavirus, President Muhammadu Buhari said in an address to the nation on Monday that acknowledged the sacrifices of the country’s poor. Initial 14-day lockdowns in the three areas began on March 30. Mr Buhari said it was crucial to extend the lockdown due to an “alarming” increase in positive cases in a number of states. “It is a matter of life and death,” Buhari said of the nation’s response. “The repercussions of any premature end to the lockdown action are…
Revision of the 2020 revenue framework has raised Federal Government’s debt service to revenue ratio from the initial 29 per cent to 48 per cent. The Executive last Wednesday sent a revised 2020 budget proposal to the National Assembly following a drop in crude oil prices caused by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Federal Government had in the budget proposal revised downward the revenue projection for the 2020 fiscal period by N3.3tn from the initial approved amount of N8.41tn to N5.08tn. The reduction in revenue projection was due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic has so…
International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved immediate debt relief for 25 countries, most of them in Africa. Nigeria is excluded from the list. In a statement by Ms Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of IMF, the international lender said it would provide $500 million in grant-based debt service relief to these countries. “Today, I am pleased to say that our Executive Board approved immediate debt service relief to 25 of IMF’s member countries under the IMF’s revamped Catastrophe Containment and Relief Trust (CCRT) as part of the Fund’s response to help address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Georgieva said. “This…
