FG’s fiscal deficit hit N4.62tn in 2019 - CBN

Federal Government recorded a fiscal deficit of N4.62tn in its operations in the 2019 fiscal period, figures obtained from Central Bank of Nigeria have revealed. 2019 budget, signed by President Muhammadu Buhari, had capital expenditure of N2.09tn, recurrent expenditure of N4.05tn, statutory transfers of N502bn, and special intervention of N500bn. The budget also had debt service of N2.25tn. Out of this figure, N1.7tn was approved for domestic debts, while N433bn was provided for foreign debts. Federal government has appealed the ruling of Federal High Court in Lagos on the collection and remittance of the Combined Expatriate and Residence Permit Aliens Card (CERPAC) fees. The appeal was filed by Ministry of Interior and Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS). The court presided by Mr Rilwanu Aikawa in his ruling in November 2019, nullified the review by Interior Ministry, nearly one year after it increased CERPAC fee. Aikawa also declared as unconstitutional the contract between the ministry and Continental Transfert Technique Ltd, or Contec, for the collection of the CERPAC fee. FG records N1.14tr deficit in three months

Fiscal operations of the Federal Government in the fourth quarter of 2019, showed an estimated deficit of N1.14 trillion, compared with the proportionate quarterly budget deficit of N479.62 billion. The government had estimated an expenditure profile of N2.59 trillion for the fourth quarter of 2019, but expended N2.07 trillion, representing a 20.1 percent shortfall and 14.1 percent compared with the level in the preceding quarter.
