Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has won five Local Government Areas in the ongoing governorship election. The local governments are Awka South, Onitsha South and Enugu Anambra East, Anaocha, and Anambra East. Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Sunday for the final collation of the election. There are 21 LGAs in Anambra but only the results of four have been announced at LG collation centers and it has been a clean sweep for the candidate of the ruling party in Anambra. Soludo has a total of 38,413 votes from the five LGAs and he is…
Meanwhile, the election was marred by voter apathy, vote-buying, late arrival of materials and the malfunction of the BVAS machine. Despite the efforts by INEC to ensure a hitch-free exercise, there were several complaints from voters in towns like Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, Isuofia and some other parts of the state. Voting was expected to start by 8.30am but as of 11am voting was yet to commence in most centres in Awka, the state capital. With over two hours into the voting exercise, the people of Mgbakwu in Awka North were still awaiting voting materials, which later arrived after midday. Party…
Isaac Adibe sat leisurely on a pavement along Ekwulobia road in Aguata Local Government Area, Anambra South Senatorial District, watching the deserted road on Friday. The sexagenarian said he heard about the cancellation of the sit-at-home order given by separatist group, IPOB, on a radio breakfast news, but he had doubts. His scepticism was fuelled by the attacks some members of IPOB, whom he called “thugs among them,” carried out on residents who breached the sit-at-home order. Adibe does his business in neighbouring Nanka, in Orumba North LGA, and he said he would brave it, nonetheless. Asked if he would…
Two of the better books on the job invented for George Washington share a title: “The Impossible Presidency”. Even the most capable presidents are doomed to fail, writes Jeremi Suri in the more recent of them: “Limiting the failure and achieving some good along the way—that is the best we can expect.” Even by these gloomy standards, Joe Biden is foundering. Having received more votes than any candidate in history, he has seen his approval ratings collapse. At this point in a first term only Donald Trump was more unpopular. The Democrats have just lost the three top statewide offices…
Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has cancelled its sit-at-home order in the southeast. The proscribed group had threatened to lock down the region from November 5 to protest the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, its leader. Emma Powerful, IPOB’s spokesperson, on Thursday, said the sit-at-home order has been cancelled to allow people in Anambra participate in the governorship election on Saturday. “Following the genuine intervention of our elders, esteemed traditional Institutions/Rulers and Religious Leaders, and after a due consideration of the positive impacts of their engagement, and sequel to the fact that our elders have spoken in our terms, the Leadership…
Iyorchia Ayu, a former senate president, was early on Sunday elected as the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Ayu, who was earlier adopted as the consensus candidate for the position, won the election unchallenged with 3,426 votes. Taofeek Arapaja, a former deputy governor of Oyo state, has also emerged as national deputy chairman (south), with 2,004 votes to defeat Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former governor of Osun state, who scored 705 votes. For the position of the national deputy chairman (north), Umar Damagum, former governorship candidate of Yobe state, polled 2,222 votes to beat Inna Ciroma, former minister of…
President Muhammadu Buhari has warned those campaigning for tenure elongation on his behalf, stressing that he would leave office in May 2023. According to a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari gave the warning at a meeting in Makkah with a select group of Nigerians resident in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia where he just ended a visit. “I swore by the Holy Qur’an that I would serve in accordance with the constitution and leave when my time is up. No “Tazarce” (tenure extension). I don’t want anybody to start talking…
An Appeal Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday dismissed the appeal of the suspended National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Uche Secondus seeking to restrain the party from conducting its National Convention, thus paving the way for the congress to commence today in Abuja. The three-man panel dismissed the appeal which was filed on October 14, 2021, “for lacking in merit.” With the scare that the convention might be stopped by a court over, 3,600 delegates from all over the country will today converge on the Eagles Square, Abuja, to elect a new National Working Committee for…
Some of the 3,600 delegates expected for the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party have started arriving in Abuja, the nation’s capital. One of our correspondents, who visited the Eagle Square, venue of the event, on Thursday, observed that the PDP flag had been hoisted in the venue, while banners and decorations adorned the area. A podium had also been assembled at the centre of the square. “I’m already in Abuja; the congress is on; it will hold,” Gombe State Chairman of the party, Mamman Kwaskebe, a retired Major general, told one of our correspondents on telephone. However, there…
As they say on social media, "F--- Joe Biden" appears to be trending. When the president visited Scranton last week, a woman held a homemade sign with that very message. In Boise, a retired gunsmith hung a flag from his roof with an almost identical message, adding: "And f--- you for voting for him!" These are among the episodes compiled by the Washington Post, which says"the anger…demonstrates how a political party or cause often needs an enemy, a target of vilification that can unite its adherents — and, in this case, one refracted through the harshness, norm-breaking, and vulgarity of…
