President Muhammadu Buhari says Mai Mala Buni, Yobe state governor, should be allowed to plan the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC). TheCable had reported how Buni worked to scuttle the APC convention scheduled for March 26. The plot came to light after Abubakar Sani Bello, Niger governor, took over the affairs of the APC. Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had subsequently rejected a notice of a national executive committee (NEC) meeting announced by Bello. In a letter dated March 16 and addressed to Atiku Bagudu, Kebbi governor and chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), Buhari said…

Soludo takes oath as Anambra governor today

Head, Soludo Media Office, Joe Anatune, has said the swearing-in of the Anambra State governor-elect, Chukwuma Soludo, would be low-keyed. In a statement in Awka on Wednesday, Anatune said the ceremony, which would take place at the Government House, Agu-Awka, would have few guests in attendance and devoid of unbridled celebrations that are usually associated with occasions of such nature. It added that Soludo, after the swearing-in, would inspect a guard of honour and consequently make his inaugural address to the people of the state. The statement also said an inter-denominational service would hold briefly before the new governor sets…
President Muhammadu Buhari has issued a warning to leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) against “name-calling and distractions” as the party prepares for its national convention. Buhari’s warning was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman. Over the past days, governors and other stakeholders in APC have engaged in back-and-forth criticism over the arrangements for the party’s national convention scheduled to hold on March 26. Amid the controversy over the zoning of national offices also came the change in leadership of the APC national caretaker committee, with Abubakar Sani Bello, governor of Niger, now…
Ebonyi State governor, Dave Umahi, and his deputy, Kelechi Igwe, have urged the Court of Appeal in Abuja to nullify the judgement of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which, on Tuesday, ordered their removal from office. The Federal High Court judge, Inyang Ekwo, had sacked Umahi and Igwe alongside 15 lawmakers of Ebonyi State House of Assembly over their defection from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC). A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered Governor David Umahi and his Deputy, Eric Kelechi Igwe, to immediately vacate office as Governor and Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State on account of their defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Justice Inyang Ekwo in his judgment held that by defecting from the party on which they were sponsored and elected as governor and deputy governor of Ebonyi State to the APC, a political party that did not win the election, they had resigned or are deemed to have resigned from office. The court…

I remain Governor of Ebonyi – Umahi

Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi has reacted to the judgement of the Federal High Court Abuja which removed him and his Deputy, Kelechi Igwe, from office on Tuesday. Umahi, who described the judgement as embarrassing, alleged that the presiding Judge was influenced to deliver the judgement against him and his deputy. He noted that there is no provision in the Nigeria Constitution whereby a serving Governor or his Deputy could be removed on account of defection to another political party. He explained it is only through death, resignation or Impeachment by the state House of Assembly that a serving Governor…
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it has submitted the names of its nominees to replace David Umahi and Eric Igwe, governor and deputy governor of Ebonyi, respectively, to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). A federal high court sitting in Abuja had, on Tuesday, ordered the removal of Umahi and Igwe from office, following their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Umahi had defected from the PDP to the APC in November 2020. Inyang Ekwo, the presiding judge, ruled that the constitution does not recognise transfer of ballot from one party to another. “There is no constitutional provision that…

TheCable had reported that his desire to stay in office nearly jeopardised plans for the national convention. The Yobe governor has been feet-dragging on preparations and issues bordering on the convention. Unknown to members of the party, Buni and John Akpanudoedehe, national secretary of the APC…
