Ghana’s Supreme Court has upheld Nana Akufo-Addo’s victory in the December presidential election, dismissing allegations of irregularities. Opposition candidate, and former President John Mahama, had filed a petition asking the court to annul the results of the elections and order a rerun because of alleged irregularities. But the court ruled that Mr Akufo-Addo had obtained more than 50% (51.295%) of total valid votes and that the electoral commission’s corrections of the declared results did not significantly impact the outcome. According to the court, the declaration of the results was therefore legal and represented the will of the people. Mr Mahama’s…
Chad’s supreme court has cleared President Idris Deby, who has been in power for 30 years, to seek a sixth term in office in the 11 April presidential election. He faces nine other candidates who were qualified by the supreme court, including his main and historical rival, Saleh Kebzabo. The inclusion of Mr Kebzabo, who had on Monday withdrawn his candidacy, has raised questions. The opposition leader had cited the “obvious militarisation of the political climate” following the deadly attempt by security forces to arrest another opposition candidate, Yaya Dillo, at his home in the capital, N’Djamena. The 28 February…
Supporters of the losing presidential candidate in Niger set several buildings on fire, burnt tyres and threw rocks at the police on Thursday, as the authorities announced that two people had been killed in post-election protests this week. The national electoral commission on Tuesday declared ruling party candidate Mohamed Bazoum winner of Sunday’s runoff election with 55.75% of the vote, but his rival, Mahamane Ousmane, a former president, has alleged fraud and claimed he won with 50.3%. Since then, two people have been killed and 468 detained during protests by Ousmane’s supporters in the capital Niamey, Interior Minister Alkache Alhada…
Ruling party candidate Mohamed Bazoum was declared winner of Niger’s presidential election on Tuesday while his opponent alleged fraud and opposition supporters burned tyres in the streets. Bazoum, a 61-year-old former interior minister, won 55.75% of the vote in Sunday’s election, according to the electoral commission. He beat Mahamane Ousmane, a former president who was toppled by a coup in 1996. The provisional results must still be confirmed by the constitutional court. The election is meant to usher in Niger’s first transition from one democratically elected leader to another, with President Mahamadou Issoufou stepping down after two five-year terms. “I…
Niger votes today (Sunday) in the second round of a presidential election that is expected to usher in the first democratic transition of power since the West African nation gained independence from France in 1960. Ruling party candidate Mohamed Bazoum is seen by many as the favourite after leading in the first round on Dec. 27 with 39.3% of the vote. He is up against former President Mahamane Ousmane, who scored 17%. Bazoum, a 61-year-old politician who had held several top positions in outgoing President Mahamadou Issoufou’s governments including the foreign and interior ministries, is backed by the candidates who…
Christians have been urged to come out in encouraging numbers to register in any of the political parties for the 2023 General Elections. He said this was the right time for Christians to register in any party of their choice "and be involved in the activities of the party from the ward level to the national". Ndukuba further emphasized that with what was going…
Only five days after it began, Donald Trump's Senate impeachment trial has concluded. As was widely predicted, the final verdict was that the former president was not guilty of inciting an insurrection at the US Capitol last month. There have now been four presidential impeachment trials in US history, and this one was by far the shortest. What it lacked in duration, however, it will make up in consequence. A precedent - a former president standing trial - was set. Reputations were burnished and tarnished. And a tumultuous stage was set for political battles to come. Here's a look at…
