There was wild jubilation yesterday in some parts of Edo State as Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja, Saturday, dismissed a suit of forgery against Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki for want of merit. Mohammed dismissed the suit brought by Obaseki’s former party, All Progressives Congress (APC) on the grounds that they failed to prove allegations of forgery against the governor. Obaseki hailed the decision of the court as triumph of truth and rule of law in a statement immediately after the judgment. According to the judge, the plaintiffs’ reliance on photocopies of Obaseki’s credentials in instituting the…

Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has described Nigeria’s presidential system of government as “totally useless,” and expressed its readiness to engage other parts of the country in a debate on Nigeria’s future, saying it was ready for the restructuring of the country. Convener of the Forum, Ango Abdullahi, a retired professor, stated this in a telephone interview with Vanguard. Abdullahi, who expressed the preference of the North for a return to the parliamentary system of government, said the current presidential system had caused more division than uniting the country. Abdullahi said: “Today, we may appear to have a federal system of…

A Bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to fix the age limit to contest political offices in Nigeria suffered a setback in the House of Representatives on Wednesday. Eke was later compelled to step it down “for further consultation”. The Bill set the maximum age for the President and Vice-President at 70; governor, deputy governor and senators at 65 years, while the House of Representatives and Houses of Assembly are 60 and 50…

Goodluck Jonathan is an angel - Ganduje

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said he was wrongly judged by some of his friends and political opponents before the 2015 presidential election because of his personal convictions and the vision he had for the country. He, however, insisted that he does not hold any grudge against his detractors for their harsh criticisms. It would be recalled that the ex-President was widely criticised, before the election, for his approach to alleged corruption in his administration, the perennial problem of insecurity, and the sacking of some top government functionaries within his administration including the former Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido…

Ghana president Akufo-Addo wins re-election

Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has won a second four-year term in office, the election commission said on Wednesday, following a tightly contested vote that was tainted by violence in which five people died.
