Uganda’s election commission on Saturday declared incumbent Yoweri Museveni the winner of the presidential election, extending his 35-year rule as his main rival alleged fraud and urged citizens to reject the result. U.S. House impeaches Trump for a second time

Donald Trump on Wednesday became the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice, as 10 of his fellow Republicans joined Democrats in the House of Representatives to charge him with inciting an insurrection in last week’s violent rampage in the Capitol. The vote in the Democratic-controlled House was 232-197 following the deadly assault on American democracy, although it appeared unlikely the swift impeachment would lead to Trump’s ouster before his four-year term ends and Democratic President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated on Jan. 20. The Senate’s Republican majority leader, Mitch McConnell, rejected Democratic calls for a quick impeachment trial,…
Joe Concha The leader of the free world, at least for the next nine days, got banned on Friday night from using his favorite form of communication whenTwitter permanently dismissed him from the platform. The questions are: How did we get here? And where do we go next? First, let's review Twitter's decision to ban Trump in perpetuity. The last straw apparently came Friday afternoon after Trump tweeted that he won't be attending President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration. When told the news, Biden said he was in agreement with Trump. No matter: Twitter explained its decision this way: "President Trump's statement…

There was wild jubilation yesterday in some parts of Edo State as Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja, Saturday, dismissed a suit of forgery against Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki for want of merit. Mohammed dismissed the suit brought by Obaseki’s former party, All Progressives Congress (APC) on the grounds that they failed to prove allegations of forgery against the governor. Obaseki hailed the decision of the court as triumph of truth and rule of law in a statement immediately after the judgment. According to the judge, the plaintiffs’ reliance on photocopies of Obaseki’s credentials in instituting the…

Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has described Nigeria’s presidential system of government as “totally useless,” and expressed its readiness to engage other parts of the country in a debate on Nigeria’s future, saying it was ready for the restructuring of the country. Convener of the Forum, Ango Abdullahi, a retired professor, stated this in a telephone interview with Vanguard. Abdullahi, who expressed the preference of the North for a return to the parliamentary system of government, said the current presidential system had caused more division than uniting the country. Abdullahi said: “Today, we may appear to have a federal system of…
Niger votes in an election on Sunday (today) that is expected to lead to the first transfer of power between two democratically elected presidents in a country reeling from Islamist violence. Former interior minister Mohamed Bazoum, the ruling party’s candidate, is the overwhelming favourite to succeed President Mahamadou Issoufou, who is stepping down after two five-year terms leading the largely desert country of 23 million. Bazoum, 60, has promised continuity with Issoufou’s policies, while also vowing to clean up pervasive corruption. “If I am lucky enough to win this election, you will have chosen someone who is ready from day…
A former Chief Whip of the Senate, Sola Adeyeye, a retired professor, has said that the Senior Pastor of the Citadel Global Community Church in Lagos, Tunde Bakare, was not campaigning for former Lagos State governor Bola Tinubu to be President. Bakare had in a viral video said Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, fought and won many battles on behalf of the Yoruba people. Adeyeye, in various messages posted on his WhatsApp status between Friday and Saturday, argued that Bakare did not endorse Tinubu by his action. The former Senate Principal Officer said, “You have missed…
A Bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to fix the age limit to contest political offices in Nigeria suffered a setback in the House of Representatives on Wednesday. The Bill, sponsored by Bede Eke (PDP, Imo), was roundly rejected by the lawmakers who continuously shouted him down as he made to defend his position. Eke was later compelled to step it down “for further consultation”. The Bill set the maximum age for the President and Vice-President at 70; governor, deputy governor and senators at 65 years, while the House of Representatives and Houses of Assembly are 60 and 50…
