United Kingdom has threatened to ban anyone guilty of electoral violence ahead of the Ondo and Edo governorship elections. In a statement on Tuesday, UK embassy in Nigeria also threatened to seize overseas assets of such persons. In a statement via its Twitter handle, UK said it will send observers for the upcoming elections in the two states. “As a friend and partner of Nigeria, we are closely following the lead up to…
Constitutional experts raised prospect of two years of military-led rule in Mali following last month’s coup at talks on Friday, defying calls by West African economic bloc ECOWAS for elections within a year. The Aug. 18 coup that toppled Ibrahim Boubacar Keita led to swift economic sanctions by ECOWAS, which fears it could set a dangerous precedent in the region and undermine the fight against Islamist militants across West Africa’s Sahel region. The experts’ recommendations emerged on the second day of talks on a transition. Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has given the ruling junta until Tuesday to…
All Progressives Congress has said contrary to misgivings in some quarters about its commitment to fulfilling its campaign promise of restructuring the country, steps so far taken by President Muhammadu Buhari towards implementation of report of 2014 National Conference and that of the Nasir El-Rufai-led APC committee on true federalism was enough proof that restructuring has begun. This is contained in the September edition of the in-house monthly magazine of APC, The Progressives. The piece was titled, ‘Calm Down! Restructuring has begun’ and the e-copy of the magazine was accessed on Monday. According to the party, successive administrations had wasted…
Supreme Court on Monday affirmed the election of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State. A seven-man panel of the court led by Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mr Tanko Muhammad, made this declaration in two judgments dismissing the separate appeals filed by Peoples Democratic Party and the Social Democratic Party. The apex court affirmed the earlier July 4, 2020 judgments of Court of Appeal in Abuja and verdicts of the election petition tribunal, which had both upheld Bello’s victory at the poll. The Monday’s judgments affirm the validity of the November 16, 2019 governorship election in Kogi State. Both PDP and…

Former Secretary to Ondo State Government, Mr Ifedayo Abegunde has made a u-turn on his political stand, as he reunites with the state governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu. Abegunde had shortly before the governorship primary election of All Progressive Congress (APC) resigned his appointment as SSG and teamed up with another governorship aspirant, Mr Segun Abraham. However, Abraham later stepped down for Akeredolu in the primary election, a development which caused serious confusion in Abegunde’s camp. Abegunde was quoted to have alleged that Akeredolu did not win the 2016 election, but some individuals including himself allegedly rigged the election in his…
