A group of northern elders have commenced legal process for the secession of Southeast from the Nigerian federation. In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/538/2021, the plaintiffs led by Nastura Ashir Shariff, Balarabe Rufa’I, Abdul-Aziz Sulaiman and Aminu Adam are praying the Abuja division of the Federal High Court to compel the National Assembly to hasten the exit of the Southeast before the conclusion of ongoing constitutional amendment. They averred in their supporting affidavit that their action was informed by the need to stem the tide of violence and destruction allegedly occasioned by the agitation for secession championed by the Nnamdi Kanu-led…
Anambra state governorship election may suffer serious setback as the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared total lockdown in all states in south East from November 5 to November 10, to compel the federal government to release its leader, Nnamdi Kanu. The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has fixed the Anambra gubernatorial election for November 6, 2021. But in a statement issued by its media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB said, “Following the adjournment of Nnamdi Kanu’s court case to 10th of November 2021, by the Federal High Court Abuja, it demanded all lovers of Biafra and…
Reported cases of violence and protests marred Saturday’s conduct of congresses in 34 out of the 36 states of the federation by the governing All Progressives Congress. While Ogun and Osun states recorded clashes between suspected thugs and loyalists of factional leaders, there were speculations that the exercise was suspended in Oyo State following reports that congress materials were forged by unknown persons. Parallel congresses reigned supreme in states such as Osun, Ogun, Kwara and Enugu. In Ogun, hoodlums attacked venue of the factional congress being held by loyalists of former governor Ibikunle Amosun in Abeokuta. Pandemonium broke out when…
At least 50 vehicles parked around the Jogor Centre, Ibadan, where the Mulikat Adeola-Akande-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party held its state congress on Saturday were vandalised by hoodlums. The hoodlums, in their scores, armed with sticks and machetes, were, however, prevented by security agents from entering the venue of the congress. It was gathered that the hoodlums had earlier attacked the venue of the parallel congress held at an event centre around the Oke-Ado area of Ibadan. Sources said the first attack happened at about 2am. Two aggrieved PDP leaders in the state, Nureni Akanbi and Bisi Olopoeyan,…
Senate has reconsidered its stance on the electoral act amendment bill and has empowered Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine the best mode to transmit election results. The electoral commission will now have to decide how to transmit election results — either electronically or manually. The upper legislative chamber also approved that all political parties must use the direct primary mode in picking candidates. Senate approved four clauses in the electoral act amendment bill. In July, the senate empowered the Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC) to determine the electronic transmission of election results. The provision caused an outrage, with many calling…
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has sent a passionate appeal to members of the National Assembly who are in the process of reconciling the different versions of the Electoral Act (amendment) Bill passed by both chambers to save the country the crisis and trouble that will result from the proposal to make direct primaries compulsory for parties in sourcing candidates for elections. Saraki in a statement signed on his behalf by Yusuph Olaniyonu, head of his Media Office, noted that the decision to include a provision in the proposed Electoral Act which makes it compulsory for parties to adopt direct…
National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, returned to Nigeria on Friday after about a three-month medical trip to the United Kingdom, where he underwent a knee surgery. While in London, he was visited by a number of politicians, including President Muhammadu Buhari; Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; Governors Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), and Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti). Others who visited Tinubu included a former governor of Ogun State and incumbent Senator representing Ogun Central, Ibikunle Amosun; former governor of Borno State and Senator representing Borno Central, Kashim Shettima;…
A group, Downtrodden Peoples Services (DPS), has cautioned Nigerians not to put their trust in both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying the two political parties cannot take the country to the promised land. Convener of the group, Kunle Bewaji, while addressing journalists in Ibadan, said the time has come for the masses to reject the two parties and form a movement where their interest would be represented, stating that the present system run by both APC and PDP at the national and state levels favours only the politicians to the detriment of…
There is palpable tension in Anambra State as a result of the widespread violence recorded recently in the build-up to the November governorship election in the state. While many people see the killings and attacks witnessed in the state as politically motivated; others believe they are being perpetrated by members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). IPOB has been on rampage not just in Anambra State, but across the Southeast geopolitical zone. The agitation for an independent state, Biafra, championed by IPOB, has led to killings and destruction in the Southeast region. IPOB’s security arm, Eastern Security Network,…
For 22 years, 22 top politicians have remained in government since the country returned to democracy in 1999, moving from one position to another – elective and appointive. Because they have remained in circulation, manning government positions for over two decades, they are being regarded as ‘’landlords of Nigeria.” Some of them started as governors, local government chairmen, commissioners, ministers and members of the parliament. There are others who, after retiring from the civil service, military and paramilitary organisations, among others, crossed over to the political terrain. Analysts and university dons are divided on their long stay in government. To…
