Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has the capacity to transmit results electronically, despite the poor conditions in remote areas across the country. It would be recalled that National Assembly blocked the transmission of election results through electoral means in clause 50(2) of the electoral act amendment bill. After heated arguments among senators, the bill was finally passed on Thursday at the senate, but with provisions on electronic transmission of results. Majority of the senate voted in favour of allowing Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to certify national coverage, followed by an approval by the national assembly before INEC can…
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has won the country's delayed elections with an overwhelming majority, the election board said on Saturday. The board said Abiy's Prosperity Party won 410 out of 436 seats, giving him another five-year term in office. However, a fifth of the country failed to carry out voting overall due to insecurity and logistical problems. Polls were not held in the war-torn Tigray region, where many thousands are living in famine conditions. Another round of elections has been penned for 6 September in the affected areas, but a date has not been confirmed for Tigray. The election…

Northern mouthpiece, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), yesterday, said it would not ask for a separate country out of Nigeria like the Igbo and Yoruba are doing with agitation for Biafra and Oduduwa Republic. ACF also said it would not be part of agitation for the break-up of the country as canvassed by Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and some Yoruba youths, led by Sunday Igboho. However, the forum tasked northerners to unite and fight against activities of kidnappers, bandits and other criminal elements in the region. In their separate remarks at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the forum,…
Ebrahim Raisi, a hardline judge who is under U.S. sanctions for human rights abuses, secured victory as expected on Saturday in Iran’s presidential election after a contest marked by voter apathy over economic hardships and political restrictions. With all 28.9 million ballots counted, Raisi was elected with a tally of 17.9 million, Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said on state TV. Turnout in Friday’s four-man race was a record low of around 48.8% and there were 3.7 million invalid ballots that were likely to have been mostly blank or protest votes. Appointed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to the…

As part of the arrangement, the two men would split the term as prime minister, with Lapid expected to take over in two years, the Jerusalem Post reported. "Thank you Netanyahu for a long service with many achievements for the State of Israel, for strengthening Israel's diplomatic status and security," Bennett said in Hebrew before the Knesset on…
PRESS RELEASE President Muhammadu Buhari’s reference to Lagos while speaking on the future of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has nothing to do with party stalwart Bola Tinubu, the Presidency said last night. During his interview with Arise TV, when the President was asked on his desire for the APC after his tenure, he said: “The hope of this administration is to see APC last beyond it. Therefore, we should allow the party to decide. You cannot sit there in Lagos, for instance, and decide on the fate of APC on zoning. The restructuring of the party has begun from…
