Nigerians win US Senate, state Assembly seats

A Nigerian, Oye Owolewa, cruised into victory on Tuesday night to become the first Nigerian-American to be elected to the United States (US) of America Congress. The 30-year-old is heading to the US Senate to represent the District of Columbia (DC) as a shadow congressman under the Democratic Party. Owolewa garnered 164,026 votes, representing 82.84 percent of the total votes cast. Voters in DC elect two shadow senators, who are not officially sworn in or seated by the US Senate. These non-voting delegates can vote in committees, speak on the floor of the chamber, and sponsor legislation, but cannot vote…
Ivory Coast opposition leaders refused to disband their breakaway government on Wednesday despite being put under effective house arrest following a disputed presidential election. The country and its neighbour Guinea are experiencing parallel post-election crises after their presidents both decided to run for a controversial third term in office, prompting fears of prolonged instability. The moves could spook investors and undermine democracy in a region where Islamist groups exploit discord to win recruits, analysts say. The opposition in Ivory Coast boycotted Saturday’s election and announced a rival administration after President Alassane Ouattara was declared the landslide winner. On Tuesday night…
Contrary to the prevailing wisdom among the cognoscenti, history and current circumstances suggest President Donald Trump is going to defeat former Vice President Joe Biden — for some of the very same reasons he came from behind in 2016 to shock the Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. It is understandable why conventional wisdom is getting this wrong again. Trump is down in the polls, the nation’s demographics are continuing to change in ways unfavorable to Trump and Republicans, the coronavirus has wrought death and economic destruction throughout the land and Trump’s personality provokes stormy oceans of antipathy — perhaps most…
Mr Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, says it is time to restructure Nigeria in order to ensure equitable distribution of resources. Speaking at a public lecture to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Arewa House, held in Kaduna on Saturday, the governor maintained that restructuring the country is in the best interest of ensuring sustainable development. El-Rufai, who cited the 2018 recommendations of the APC committee on restructuring, noted that there was a need to reorganise the country’s constitutional framework in order to give states more control over certain resources. The focus of the APC committee set up in 2017 and…

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed indefinitely, the outstanding 15 bye-elections earlier scheduled to hold on Oct 31. The commission made the disclosure in a statement issued by its National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr Festus Okoye, in Abuja after INEC’s meeting held on Thursday. He cited the security situation in the country, following the #EndSARS protests going on in some parts of the country, adding that the commission would meet in the next two weeks to review the situation for a possible date for the bye-elections. Okoye said that INEC met with the 37…
The outcome of Election Day 2020 would seem to be a foregone conclusion if the latest national and battleground state polls are any guide as to whether President Trump will win his re-election bid. However, the Gallup organization has just released the results of a new survey that suggests President Trump might have a better shot than you’d think. Most Americans responded positively to the survey question asking whether they felt better off now than they did four years ago. Here’s the thing about Election Day 2020. Yes, it appears that if current trends hold, and based on almost every…
Some members of All Progressive Congress (APC) have issued a 14-day ultimatum to the party’s caretaker committee, led by Mr Mala Buni, who is also governor of Yobe state, to set up a panel for the party’s national convention. After the national working committee under the leadership of Mr Adams Oshiomhole was dissolved, Buni was asked to run the affairs of the party pending when new officials will be elected. In a statement signed by Mr Abdullahi Dauda, spokesman of a group of APC members, alleged that instead of making plans for the December national convention, the committee is “scheming…
For his ‘verbal assaults’ on President Muhammadu Buhari, a Special Adviser on Media to Kano Governor, Mr Salihu Yakasai, was on Sunday suspended. Governor Abdullahi Ganduje said he suspended Yakasai over his “unguarded utterances on the person of Mr Buhari on social media.” Ganduje had also sacked former Commissioner of Works for mocking late Abba Kyari who died of Covid-19. Yakasai’s indefinite suspension was contained in a statement by Commissioner for Information, Mr Muhammad Garba, saying “the suspension is with immediate effect.” The Governor said though the media aide owned up to the indiscreet comment as his personal opinion, as…
