Rep member reveals monthly take-home pay

A member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives gets, at least, N9.3 million every month as salary and running cost, a member of the House said on Thursday. The actual salary collected by federal lawmakers in Nigeria is a contentious issue and has pitched the population against the lawmakers on many occasions. Speaking at an event to mark Nigeria’s 60th anniversary, Mr Simon Karu representing Kaltungo/Shongom federal constituency, claimed that the monthly take-home pay of each member in the lower legislative chamber is up to N9.3 million. He, however, said many lawmakers share the money to their constituents. “The official salary…
President Muhammadu Buhari has asked National Assembly to approve the refund of N148 billion to Ondo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Osun and Rivers States for federal road projects the five states executed. The president made this known in a letter on Tuesday sent to the speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, and read on the floor of the house. From the breakdown, Ondo State, where the governorship election will hold next week, is to receive N7 billion. Senate had last year approved N10 billion to Kogi State, three days to its governorship election. The approval was criticised by…

Chaos reigns in first Trump-Biden debate

Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic rival Joe Biden battled fiercely over Trump’s leadership on the coronavirus pandemic, the economy and the integrity of November’s election in a chaotic first debate on Tuesday marked by personal insults, name calling and Trump’s repeated interruptions. Moderator Chris Wallace never established control of the debate. The two White House contenders talked over each other and lobbed insults in a breathtaking political brawl that made it hard for either to make a point. “Will you shut up, man? This is so unpresidential,” said an exasperated Biden after Trump’s repeated interruptions during the first segment…

He said the deployment of EVMs was part of efforts to deepen electoral integrity in Nigeria. Togo appoints first female Prime Minister

President Faure Gnassingbe of Togo has named Ms Victoire Tomegah-Dogbe as prime minister, making her the first woman to hold the position in the West African nation. Tomegah-Dogbe replaces Mr Komi Klassou whose government resigned on Friday. Tomegah-Dogbe, 60, has held several ministerial positions since 2008, including that of development minister, and also chief of staff of the president’s office. The change in Togo’s government had been expected since Gnassingbe won re-election in March, extending his 15-year rule and a family dynasty that began when his father took power in a 1967 coup. Ahead of the February election, a fractured…
Mali’s transitional president appointed former minister of foreign affairs, Mr Moctar Ouane, on Sunday as the West African nation’s prime minister days after being sworn into office. The appointment of a civilian prime minister was a major condition imposed by West African regional economic bloc, ECOWAS, on Mali to lift sanctions that were imposed after an Aug. 18 coup. ECOWAS had closed borders to Mali and stopped financial flows to put pressure on the junta to quickly return to a civilian government. Former Defense Minister and retired Colonel Major, Mr Bah N’Daw was inducted Friday as the new transitional president…
Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, on Friday met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The governor however told State House correspondents at the end of the meeting that it would be immoral for him to return to All Progressives Congress. Obaseki of Peoples Democratic Party beat Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu of Buhari’s All Progressives Congress and others to win the last Saturday’s governorship election in his state. He had dumped APC for PDP when the ruling party disqualified him from participating in its primary election. There have been concerns that having won the election on the platform…
