Foreign exchange scarcity and recent appreciation of the price of crude oil in the international market are threatening smooth supply of petrol in the country. Daily Trust gathered that for over three months now marketers have not been importing the product into the country due to the tricky nature of the situation. “Right now government is not paying subsidy, even with the lower exchange rate of 285/$1, the increase in the price of crude oil has shot the landing cost of the refined product by about 40 percent,”, a marketer who asked for anonymity said yesterday. “When the partial deregulation…
Soldiers interrogating captured Boko Haram suspects have found one of the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by the extremist group nearly three years ago, along with her baby, Nigeria's military said Thursday. Nearly 300 girls were kidnapped by the insurgents from a government boarding school in the remote northeastern town of Chibok in April 2014, a mass abduction that shocked the world and brought Boko Haram international attention. Most of the girls remain in captivity. In May, one girl escaped. In October, the government negotiated the release of 21 more. Another girl was freed in November in an army raid on an…
Prominent leaders of the Niger Delta region including Chief Edwin Clark, on Thursday faulted President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration for what they described as the attempt to humiliate the family of former President Goodluck Jonathan. They also described as worrisome the seeming silence of Buhari on the frequent “harassment” of the former President’s family members by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The leaders’ position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a meeting organised by the Pan Niger Delta Forum at the residence of Clark in Kiagbodo, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State. The Federal Government has resumed payments of cash stipends to former militants agreed under a 2009 amnesty in the country's Niger Delta oil hub, a government official said on Thursday. The government has been holding talks with militants to end attacks on crude pipelines which reduced Nigeria's output by 700,000 barrels a day for several months last year. Authorities had originally cut the budget for cash payments to militants to end corruption but later resumed payments to stop pipeline attacks crippling vital oil revenues. "Two months of the ex-militants' stipends were paid yesterday ... The rest of their stipends will…
Following the federal government ban on the importation of vehicles through the land borders, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Seme Command, is set to lose 50 per cent of its monthly revenue valued at about N13 billion. The Seme command of the NCS rakes in between N25 billion to N28 billion monthly with 50 per cent of that amount coming from vehicle importation. The federal government had last year prohibited the importation of vehicles, new and old, through land borders, restricting all vehicle imports to Nigeria Sea Ports only. However, Customs Area Controller of Seme Border, Victor Dimka said: “You…
Magistrates in Osun State have unanimously resolved to embark on an indefinite strike should the Commissioner of Police, Fimihan Adeoye, fail to arrest the Oluwo of Iwo, Abdulrasheed Akanbi, and make him available in court on Friday, January 6. Osinbajo, Obasanjo mocked for New Year song

It’s the country of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti and pop stars Davido and Wizkid. But a more unusual set of singers grabbed the spotlight in Nigeria this week with their New Year message. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo led a choir including former president Olusegun Obasanjo and military ruler Yakubu Gowon in a rendition of the 18th century hymn “O God Our Help in Ages Past”. Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” it wasn’t. Yet it was hard not to see parallels in the video, with the political heavyweights singing earnestly into microphones, headphones over their ears.
