Buhari meets ASUU, insists on IPPIS

Federal Government defended its Integrated Personnel and Information System on Thursday, insisting that the policy had come to stay. This came as President Muhammadu Buhari met with leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities and urged the lecturers to embrace IPPIS with a promise to increase university funding. This, he said, would complement efforts being made to resolve the union’s face-off with the government over IPPIS. The government said at the meeting that up to 70 per cent of university lecturers had already enrolled in the system, arguing that it was an indication of its acceptance by the majority of…

Olubajo said details of the disagreement were still not very clear…
US officials, according to Newsweek and CBS News, believe that Ukrainian International Airlines Flight 752 was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile. Pentagon officials told Newsweek that the plane was probably shot down by accident, as Iran's surface-to-air missile systems were likely active at the time of the crash. The incident occurred shortly after Iran fired a barrage of ballistic missiles at US and coalition forces in Iraq in response to a US drone strike that killed top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani. Ukrainian International Airlines Flight 752 was hit by fire from a Russian-built Tor M-1 surface-to-air missile system,…
Retired Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North responded to President Trump's national address Wednesday, and shed light on actions taken by the president to aid U.S. troops amid rising tensions in the Middle East. "I was pleased to see him explain to the world why we did what we did," North said on "Hannity" of Trump's decision to order a drone strike that killed Iran Gen. Qassem Soleimani. "I don't think he [Trump] backed down at all. I think he laid out the parameters that if you kill an American, someone in Iran is going to be paying the price for…
Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mr Mathew Kukah, has accused Federal Government of being sympathetic to Islamist insurgents. He alleged that the government, by allocating key positions to hardline Muslims, gave tacit approval to insurgent to reign. This is as the outspoken cleric condemned the beheading of 10 persons believed to be Christians by members of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). In a statement through the Diocese’s Communications Office, Kukah accused Federal Government of using different methods to achieve the same goal of Islamic dominance in Nigeria. “The only difference between the government and Boko Haram is that Boko…
Chairman, Senate Committee on Army, Mr Ali Ndume, has said the renewed insurgency being experienced in North-East geopolitical zone will continue unless the critical challenges confronting the nation’s armed forces are urgently addressed. Ndume, a former leader of the Senate, stated this in an interview with our correspondent on Wednesday. He said the poor funding of Nigerian Armed Forces, and the inadequate troops that were prosecuting the insurgency war, were not good enough for the country. Ndume said, “The challenge that the military have now is lack of resources and inadequate personnel. As long as resources are not deployed in…
The U.S. and Iran stepped back from the brink of possible war on Wednesday as President Donald Trump signaled he would not retaliate militarily for Iran’s missile strikes on Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops. No one was harmed in the strikes, but U.S. forces in the region remained on high alert. Speaking from the White House, Trump seemed intent on deescalating the crisis, which spiraled after he authorized the targeted killing last week of Iran’s top general, Qassem Soleimani. Iran responded overnight with its most direct assault on America since the 1979 seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, firing…

Iran struck back at the United States for the killing of a top Iranian general early Wednesday, firing a series of ballistic missiles at two Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops in a major escalation that brought the two longtime foes closer to war. Iranian state TV said it was in revenge for the U.S. killing of Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani, whose death last week in an American drone strike near Baghdad prompted angry calls to avenge his slaying. A U.S. official said there were no immediate reports of American casualties, though buildings were still being searched. ‘All is well!’…
