Aggrieved protesters blocked the convoy of Vice-President, Mr Yemi Osinbajo, along Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Expressway, in Abuja, yesterday morning, to demand the Presidency’s intervention in alleged land grabbing in the Federal Capital Territory. The vice-president was heading to the airport when his convoy ran into a barricade at Goza village axis of the road. Residents of Gbagyi village had converged on the spot, which is the major road connecting the airport to the city, to protest alleged invasion of their land by the military. Osinbajo’s security aides tried to appease the protesters but failed. This forced Osinbajo to alight from…
Chairman of Northern Elders Forum, Mr Ango Abdullahi, has lamented the growing security challenges facing the country, saying President Muhammadu Buhari is not doing enough to salvage the situation. The former Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, was reacting to the Presidency’s assertion that kidnap of district head of Daura, Buhari’s hometown in Katsina State, had shown the security agencies were not giving any town preferential treatment. Speaking on the abduction of Mr Musa Uba, Mr Buhari’s brother-in-law, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, said on Kakaaki, a breakfast television programme on AIT, …

He also defended the meeting between Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, and leadership of Miyetti Allah, adding that the government needed the cooperation of Miyetti Allah to help in tackling weapons proliferation as the security situation in the country worsens. Shehu, who was a guest on Channels TV’s Sunrise Dailyon Tuesday, urged Nigerians not to politicise the meeting, arguing that all stakeholders…
Pan Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere and its Ndigbo counterpart, Ohanaeze, have berated Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, for likening Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria to their groups. Shehu had said Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria should not be criminalised because the Fulani group was in the same league with Afenifere and Ohanaeze Ndigbo. But the two socio-political organisations said it was wrong to compare them with Miyetti Allah. While Ohanaeze said it was in the same pedestal with the Arewa Consultative Forum, Afenifere on other hand described the…

Federal Government, yesterday, drew the battle line with state governments over financial autonomy for local councils. Alarmed by the continuous misuse of cash allocated to local councils across the country by state governments through the State Joint Local Government Accounts, SJLGA, federal government outlawed the meddling of states in council allocations via the newly inaugurated Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU, excised from Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, recently. The government set June 1, 2019, as take-off date for the new order, making it compulsory for all LGA allocations to go straight to their respective bank accounts. However, the Federal Government’s…

Nature is in more trouble now than at any other time in human history, with extinction looming over 1 million species of plants and animals, scientists said Monday in the United Nations’ first comprehensive report on biodiversity. It’s all because of humans, but it’s not too late to fix the problem, the report said. Species loss is accelerating to a rate tens or hundreds of times faster than in the past, the report said. More than half a million species on land “have insufficient habitat for long-term survival” and are likely to go extinct, many within decades, unless their habitats…
