The meeting between striking non-teaching staff of universities and the federal government has ended on a positive note. The workers, members of three non-academic unions, SSANU, NASU and NAAT, agreed to consider the federal government’s offer with the possibility of suspending their strike. Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mr Maikanti Baru, has said that an average of 700,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil was deferred in 2016 due to pipeline sabotage. Baru said that this sabotage brought Nigeria’s production down to as low as 1.3 million barrels per day from 2.2 million barrels targeted for the period. NECO releases 2017June/July exam results

National Examination Council has announced release of 2017June/July Senior School Certificate Examination results. Registrar of the council, Professor Charles Uwakwe, announced the results in Minna on Thursday. Uwakwe said that 1,055,988 candidates registered for the examination, among whom 1,051,472 wrote the tests in 76 subjects. He said that 745,053 candidates, representing 70.85 per cent had five credits and above, including English Language and mathematics, in the examination. Uwakwe said the performance represented 1.11 per cent improvement in candidates’ performance compared with 2016 results. 53 feared dead in Kebbi boat mishap

Chairman of Bagudo Local Government Council in Kebbi, Mr Muhammad Zagga, confirmed on Thursday that no fewer than 53 traders were feared dead in a boat mishap on River Niger in Bagudo, Kebbi State. Zagga, in a phone interview, said the traders were going to a market when the incident happened. “Majority of the traders are from Gaya Village in Niger Republic. “They were going to a market in Lolo when their boat capsized,” he said. Resident doctors suspend strike

National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has suspended its strike. The suspension was announced in the early hours of Thursday after a meeting of the executives the association. The doctors failed to reach a decision in an earlier meeting. The strike by the doctors, which commenced on September 4, crippled activities in public hospitals across Nigeria.
