Nigeria sliding off the democratic path - Obi

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the February 25 election, says Nigeria is swinging away from the boundaries of democracy. In a post on his official X page on Friday to commemorate international democracy day, Obi called on Nigerians to remain committed to building and reinforcing the democracy of the nation. “As witnessed in the country today, the mindless erosion of the very ideals and tenets on which Nigeria’s democracy was built, if not checked, will only push the nation deeper into lawlessness,” Obi said. “The current trend of endemic corruption, abuse of the constitution, disrespect…
A survey of more than 36,000 people in 30 countries has found that younger people increasingly believe that democracy is incapable of producing solutions to the issues that affect them most. The results of the wide-ranging poll, which was conducted between May and July of this year by George Soros’ Open Society Foundations (OSF), indicate that while democracy remains the preferred option for the vast majority of respondents, just 57% of the 18-35 age group view it as being preferable to other means of governance. “Our findings are both sobering and alarming,” OSF president Mark Malloch Brown said of the…
A U.S. federal court has granted President Bola Tinubu’s motion to use documents from the Nigerian tribunal judgement passed last Wednesday to block his Chicago State University (CSU) records from being accessed by Atiku Abubakar, his main opponent at the February polls. Court filings obtained by Peoples Gazette showed that Judge Jeffrey Gilbert on Tuesday okayed Tinubu’s request to tender the tribunal ruling that upheld his election victory as exhibits to defend his cause at the U.S. Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago. “Intervenor Bola A. Tinubu’s Motion for Leave to File Sur-Response [27] is granted,” reads…
Phrank Shaibu, an aide to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, says the presidential election petitions tribunal should explain why “Tinubu Presidential Legal Team” is marked on the certified true copy (CTC) of the judgement. On Wednesday, the tribunal affirmed President Bola Tinubu’s victory at the February polls. In a statement on Saturday, Shaibu said the “inscription on the CTC” suggests that the tribunal accorded special privileges to Tinubu’s legal team. “It is very clear that there are many questions begging for answers, including why the PEPC came to the decision to avail the respondents, especially the Tinubu Legal Team to have…
Nigeria's main opposition candidates will appeal a tribunal ruling that affirmed Bola Tinubu's victory in a disputed presidential election in February that they claim was marred by irregularities, their lawyers said. Atiku Abubakar of the People's Democratic Party and Labour Party's Peter Obi, who came second and third respectively, had asked the court to cancel the election, alleging everything from vote fraud to failure by the electoral agency to post results electronically. They wanted Tinubu to be disqualified. But the Presidential Election Petition Court on Wednesday dismissed their petitions point-by-point in a judgment that lasted more than 11 hours. The…

PEPC upholds Tinubu's presidential victory

Presidential Election Petitions Court (PEPC) on Wednesday rejected challenges by opposition rivals to Bola Tinubu's win in February's disputed vote, following a pattern seen in previous election years in Africa's most populous country. No legal challenge to the outcome of a presidential election has succeeded in Nigeria, which returned to democracy in 1999 after three decades of almost uninterrupted military rule and has a history of electoral fraud. Atiku Abubakar of the People's Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, who came second and third respectively, had asked the court to cancel the election, alleging irregularities. Justices of…
There was heavy security deployment at the Presidential Election Petition Court and other flash points and dark spots in Abuja on Tuesday ahead of the delivery of the judgment on the election petitions challenging the election of President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday (today). This was as the supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party standard bearer, Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, and President Tinubu awaited the verdict with earnest expectations. In preparation for the judgment, scores of armed riot policemen, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other security operatives in plainclothes were deployed at strategic locations in the…
Former governor of Ekiti state, Kayode Fayemi, says democracy in the country is not working despite the end of the military administration in 1999. This is as Fayemi said the protest that trailed the fuel subsidy removal during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012 was due to political interests. He spoke Tuesday in Abuja while delivering a keynote address at a national dialogue organised to celebrate the 60th birthday of Udenta Udenta, founding national secretary of Alliance for Democracy (AD). In January 2012, President Goodluck Jonathan announced the removal of fuel subsidy, causing a significant increase in the…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the appointment of Sam Olumekun as its new national commissioner and chairman of the information and voter education committee. The electoral body announced Olumekun’s assumption of office on Tuesday in a statement issued in Abuja. Olumekun’s appointment marked the end of Festus Okoye’s five-year tenure as INEC’s national commissioner for information and voter education. Okoye’s tenure, which began on July 25, 2018, as representative of the south-east geopolitical zone in the commission, came to an end on July 24, 2023. According to Section 155(1)(c) of the constitution, national commissioners of INEC hold a…
Staff of the court of appeal have been asked to stay at home on Wednesday which has been fixed for judgment in the petitions challenging President Bola Tinubu’s election. Umar Bangari, chief registrar of the court, had earlier announced the decision of the presidential election petition court to deliver judgment on September 6. “In a bid to promote transparency and openness, these judgments will be televised live by interested Television Stations for the public to follow, ” Bangari had said. “Access to the Court premises will be strictly on accreditation. “Only accredited individuals, including counsel and representatives of political parties,…
