Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has kicked against plans by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to relocate their offices to Lagos. The ACF, in a statement yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Tukur Muhammad-Baba, described the plans as a ploy to further under-develop northern Nigeria. The CBN had, in a circular issued on January 13, notified its staff about the plan to transfer its key operational directorates to Lagos to “decongest” its headquarters. “This initiative aims to ensure compliance with building safety standards and enhance the efficient utilisation of our office space.…

They also agreed that Martin Amaewhule should be…
Rivers State Government has attributed the demolition of the House of Assembly complex to structural defects arising from explosion and fire outbreak. Joseph Johnson, the state’s commissioner for Information, said this in a statement on Wednesday in Port Harcourt. Johnson said that the incident rendered the building unfit for human use, saying that there were visible cracks on the walls and the entire structure looked frail and unsafe for legislative business. He said that professional advice was sought on the integrity of the building, after Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s inspection visit to determine the level of damage. “After the assessment of…
James Oliphant He has been impeached twice, tried to thwart the peaceful transfer of power after losing the 2020 presidential election, faces scores of charges in multiple criminal cases, and his critics warn he is plotting to rule as an autocrat. Yet, Donald Trump could still return to the White House. Trump leads his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination by nearly 50 percentage points in national opinion polls, a remarkable comeback for a one-term president who three years ago appeared vanquished and humiliated. Here are four reasons why Trump could win the November 2024 electionagainst Democratic incumbent Joe Biden:…
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the seats of the 27 lawmakers at the River House Assembly vacant, for defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Ologunagba said that by leaving the PDP, on which platform they were elected, their seats had become vacant. He said this was by virtue of the provision of Section 109 (1) (g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). “For the avoidance of…
Babangida Aliyu, a former governor of Niger state, says Nigeria’s corrupt electoral system has made it impossible for honest people to contest elections. Aliyu spoke on Saturday at the annual lecture and general meeting of the Kaduna state chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR). The former governor said delegates for primary elections see the nomination process as an avenue to make money. “One of the issues that may erode the confidence in our system is in our election and electoral system, to the extent that some prominent Nigerians are questioning whether democracy is workable in Nigeria,” he…
There was confusion in Kano State on Tuesday with the emergence of a Certified True Copy of the Court of Appeal judgment on the state gvernorship election. While the widely reported verdict of the court last Friday indicated that the appelate court upheld the decision of the petition tribunal sacking Governor Abba Yusuf, the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Isa-Dederi, argued that CTC of the judgment showed that Yusuf’s Victory at the poll was affirmed by the appeal court. Isa-Dederi disclosed this while addressing a press conference Tuesday night. He said as indicated in the written judgment, the…
Protesters on Wednesday trooped out on the streets of Kano over the judgment which sacked Governor Abba Yusuf. The police tried hard to disperse the protesters who chanted: “We Want Justice.” The lower court had declared 165,663 votes of Yusuf, who contested under the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), invalid on the grounds that they were not signed or stamped by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Last week, an Appeal Court panel had upheld the verdict of the tribunal led by Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay which sacked Yusuf on September 20, 2023. The governor’s votes were then reduced to 853,939…
