A new report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that Nigerian public officials received bribes amounting to N721 billion in 2023. The report, titled “Corruption in Nigeria: Patterns and Trends,” states that this sum is equivalent to about 0.35 percent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Nigerian customs agents have seized more than 800 rifles and 100,000 rounds of ammunition hidden in a shipping container, a senior official said on Monday, highlighting the country's struggle against firearm trafficking linked to rising crime. Customs Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi said the weapons found on June 21 had been concealed in a container alongside furniture and other goods that had been loaded in Turkey. On Sunday around 8 PM, over 20 travelers were reportedly abducted by gunmen on the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode Expressway. One victim was shot in the knee during the incident. Amnesty International reported on Wednesday that at least 540 people were killed by armed invaders in rural communities of four local government areas in Benue State within the first two months of this year. Boko Haram insurgents have abducted Haruna Mshelia, a High Court judge, alongside his wife, driver and police orderly. It was gathered that the incident occurred on Monday afternoon along the Buratai-Buni-gari road as Mshelia was returning to Maiduguri, where he serves at the Borno State High Court. Nigeria loses about $182,200 (N270.567 million) on each shipment of cargo into the country to maritime crime. This is according to data obtained from the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN).
