Somalia's new leader was inaugurated Wednesday while promising to restore dignity to the troubled Horn of Africa nation but warning it will take another two decades to "fix" the country. President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, who also holds U.S. citizenship, was elected earlier this month in a step toward Somalia's first fully functioning central government in a quarter-century. "Multiple challenges are ahead of our government. Therefore, I am telling people that because of the limited resources we have, our achievements will be limited," said Mohamed, also known as Farmajo. "For the past 26 years, there have conflicts and droughts, so it…

Kaduna state government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on parts of the state, a government spokesman said on Tuesday, after clashes killed at least 14 in the region. Conflict over grazing land and water, chiefly between semi-nomadic Muslim herders and Christian farmers, has piled pressure on authorities already facing an Islamist insurgency in its northeast and rebels in the oil-rich south. Gunmen shot dead at least 14 villagers and destroyed property in an attack on the Kaura village of Takad in southern Kaduna state on Monday, said Enock Andong, a local community leader. As a result of violence in Kaura…

UNICEF Executive Director, Anthony Lake, disclosed this on Tuesday as global leaders gather in Paris on the anniversary of the Paris Commitments to end the use of children in conflict. Lake said estimates indicated that tens of thousands under the age of 18 were being used in conflicts worldwide. According to the UNICEF chief, exact data on the number of children used and recruited in armed conflict is difficult to ascertain because of the unlawful nature of child…
Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi on Tuesday said that following the losses suffered by Boko Haram in the north-east, its fleeing members had found a haven in his state. Bello made the disclosure in Abuja while speaking at the seventh edition of the National Security Seminar entitled: “Consolidating on the Gains of Counter Terrorism Operations in Nigeria". He, however, warned that the insurgents had chosen a wrong place because he was ready to collaborate with the military to rout them out of the state. “Kogi is now a haven for Boko Haram, because many of them have relocated to my…

Trump administration has issued tough guidelines to widen the net for deporting illegal immigrants from the US, and speed up their removal. Undocumented immigrants arrested for traffic violations or shop-lifting will be targeted along with those convicted of more serious crimes. The memos do not alter US immigration laws, but take a much tougher approach towards enforcing existing measures. There are an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the US. Five questions ahead of new US travel ban White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said on Tuesday the new guidelines would not usher in mass deportations, but were designed to…
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, who turned 93 years old on Tuesday, described his wife Grace, an increasingly political figure, as "fireworks" because of her feisty remarks in his defense. A large celebration is scheduled for Saturday in tribute to Mugabe, who has ruled since independence from white minority rule in 1980. Grace Mugabe has defended her husband against critics who say it is time for him to step down, saying the ruling party should field him as a corpse if he dies before elections next year. In an interview marking his birthday that was shown late Monday on state broadcaster…
United Nations International Children Emergency Fund, UNICEF, on Monday said that 1.4 million children suffering from severe malnutrition could die this year from famine in Nigeria and three other countries. The three other countries are Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen. Drought in Somalia has left 185,000 children on the brink of famine but that figure is expected to reach 270,000 in the next few months, said UNICEF. In South Sudan,…
The Senate was yesterday told that Nigeria has since June 2015, been exporting oil and non-oil products without documentation. This was just as it heard that the development has made the country lost over N23.6 billion expected repatriated proceeds of the export within the period. Similarly, the Senate alleged discovery of over $850 billion supposedly earned by the country between 1996 and 2014 from its crude oil export proceeds but yet to be repatriated to the country by the Joint Venture Oil Companies, a development it noted, was in total contravention of Nigeria’s Pre-shipment Inspection of Export Act and Article…
