Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, on Wednesday, screened an 82-year-old non-career ambassadorial nominee, Justice Sylvanus Nsofor (retd.), who refused to recite the National Anthem when he was asked to do so. The Senate on Wednesday cleared Justice Walter Samuel Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). Onnoghen was cleared after an intensive screening during the plenary which lasted for an hour and 10 minutes. Onnoghen’s confirmation was unanimous as there was no dissenting voice. The Senate has said Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has collected N5.1 trillion as fuel subsidy without giving any account. The Senate heard that during the subsidy regime, the country paid a total of N9.93 trillion as subsidy. Of this amount, the NNPC got N5.1 trillion and Independent marketers were paid N3.83 trillion.
