Nigerian military has planned a nationwide operation to demand identity cards from citizens across the country. ‘Operation Positive Identification’ would see soldiers accosting citizens on the streets or highways and asking them to produce means of identification on the spot. Soldiers had been taking similar measures to separate citizens from terrorists in the Boko Haram-ravaged northeastern part of Nigeria. The military claimed last month that citizens in the North-east had been cooperating with troops to make the exercise successful by carrying with them valid identity documents. But the military announced on September 25 that the exercise will be extended nationwide…

U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday announced that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of violent jihadist group Islamic State, died during an overnight raid led by U.S. military forces in Syria. Here is a description of the raid according to Trump, who went into unusual detail during a national address broadcast from the White House. * The United States began to receive intelligence on the whereabouts of Baghdadi around a month ago, including some “helpful” information from the Kurds, said Trump. U.S. intelligence officials were able to “scope out” his exact location two weeks ago, while Trump himself became aware of…
In their long hunt for Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Iraqi intelligence teams secured a break in February 2018 after one of the Islamic State leader’s top aides gave them information on how he escaped capture for so many years, said two Iraqi security officials. Baghdadi would sometimes hold strategy talks with his commanders in moving minibuses packed with vegetables in order to avoid detection, Ismael al-Ethawi told officials after he was arrested by Turkish authorities and handed to the Iraqis. “Ethawi gave valuable information which helped the Iraqi multi-security agencies team complete the missing pieces of the puzzle of Baghdadi’s movements…
Back-to-back U.S. operations Saturday and Sunday have resulted in the deaths of Islamic State militant group (ISIS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and spokesperson Abu al-Hassan al-Muhajir in Syria, but the organization has already designated a successor, Newsweek has learned. Abdullah Qardash, sometimes spelled Karshesh and also known as Hajji Abdullah al-Afari, was nominated by Baghdadi in August to run the group's "Muslim affairs," according to ISIS' official Amaq news outlet. Though little is known about the former Iraqi military officer who once served under late leader Saddam Hussein, one regional intelligence official asking not to be identified by name or…
The aggressive drive by Federal Government to generate more revenue to fund its expenditure is making a nonsense of its poverty alleviation programmes. Many Nigerians are already groaning under the weight of taxes and charges as well as an increase in prices of commodities occasioned by land border closure. Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, said recently that the government had sent a Finance Bill to the National Assembly and the bill has several proposals. “One of them is the increase in VAT from five per cent to 7.5 per cent and we believe the National…

As heavy rains continue to pound on several states across the country thereby disrupting daily activities, environment experts have blamed climate change and rising global temperature for the erratic rainfall pattern which has claimed so many lives and caused environmental havoc. The experts spoke amid rising concerns among Nigerians on the unceasing rains even as the year is running to an end. Normally by October, the rains are expected to become scanty with the rainy season winding down, and giving way for the dry seasons. But lately, several parts of the country are still facing heavy rains and severe flooding,…
