All Progressives Congress in Cross River State has slammed Governor Ben Ayade of Peoples Democratic Party for returning to school to study law, describing it as a sign of idleness. The state Chairman of APC, Mr John Ochala, in Calabar on Tuesday said any serious-minded governor would not abandon governance for any academic pursuit. Ochala lamented that the state had been handed over to an unserious person who continued to drag it backwards, adding that APC had always known that the governor was “never a serious person.” He said, “We are talking about dilapidated roads all over the state. Look…
Quality of education and training provided by African countries has deteriorated since 2014, leaving many of the continent’s growing population of young people ill-prepared to enter the job market, an influential report said on Tuesday. The African Governance Report 2019, which uses data from the Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG), the most comprehensive survey of its kind on the continent, found that enrolment and access to education was particularly low in the tertiary sector. “This has resulted in the burgeoning youth population being faced with increasing struggles when entering the job market,” researchers at Mo Ibrahim Foundation wrote ahead…
Fatima, daughter of Mr Mamman Daura, President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew, has accused wife of the president of attacking her inside the presidential villa in Abuja. Commenting on a video where the first lady was seen complaining about being denied access to her apartment, Fatima said she least expected Buhari’s wife to act in a violent manner. In the video which trended on Friday while the rumour mill was agog that the president was getting married to Ms Sadiya Farouq, minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, the president’s wife was seen speaking in anger. In a BBC Hausa…
President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife, Aisha, has given a rare insight into the power struggles at the State House, with details of how husband’s relatives physically confronted her. In an interview with BBC Hausa, Mrs Buhari confirmed the authenticity of a video that circulated online last week, saying she was the woman seen speaking angrily in the footage. The incident, however, did not happen now, she said. Mrs Buhari has spoken of a “cabal” that has controlled her husband, a description understood to mean a shadowy but powerful kitchen cabinet led by Mr Buhari’s nephew, Mr Mamman Daura. A new video…

FG to spend N450bn on fuel subsidy in 2020

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, says under-recovery of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly referred to as fuel subsidy, will gulp N450bn in 2020. She said this on Monday in Abuja at the public presentation of the 2020 budget proposals. Ahmed said it was called ‘under-recovery’ because it was the cost of operation of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation. “We have a provision for under-recovery of PMS in the sum of N450bn. If you look at the Budget office’s website, it is in the fiscal framework, which is an annexure to the budget.” President Muhammadu Buhari had last…

There is no hunger in Nigeria – FG

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Sabo Nanono, on Monday, said Nigeria was producing enough food to feed itself and send to neighbouring countries. He described the cry by some Nigerians of hunger in the land as laughable, insisting that there was no hunger in Nigeria. The minister, who spoke at a press briefing to mark 2019 World Food Day in Abuja, said, “I think we are producing enough to feed ourselves. I think there is no hunger in Nigeria; there could be inconveniences. When people talk about hunger in this government, I just laugh.” According to Nanono, food…
Queen Elizabeth II, broke tradition by wearing a lighter crown for Monday’s state opening of parliament, instead of the heavier one she had worn for the same event 64 times before. The Imperial State Crown, encrusted with nearly 3,000 diamonds, was placed on a table close to the throne from which she delivered her Queen’s Speech setting out Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s work programme. The 93-year-old monarch wore the lighter Diamond Diadem, also known as the George IV diadem, as she read the speech from a throne, accompanied by her eldest son and heir, Prince Charles, 70. The queen has…
The Latest on the Nobel Prize in economics (all times local): 1 a.m. Tuesday Michael Kremer was worried the Skype message was a scam. Kremer was recognized along with Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.” Kremer says he’s watched economics change over the years to a discipline in which researchers engage more with people on the ground. He…

US sanctions Turkey over Syria offensive

The US has sanctioned two Turkish ministries and three senior government officials in response to the country's military offensive in northern Syria. President Donald Trump also phoned his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to demand an immediate truce, Vice-President Mike Pence said. Mr Pence said he would travel to the region "as quickly as possible". Syria's army earlier entered areas in the north-east. This could result in a confrontation with Turkish-led forces. The Syrian army deployment followed a deal with Kurdish-led forces, who until last week were US allies. Turkey says its offensive aims to push Kurdish forces from the…
