Senate wednesday cautioned President Muhammadu Buhari’s nominees for head of agencies against assumption of office without its confirmation following reports that nominee for the Executive Secretary of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Mr. Tony Ojukwu, has already assumed duties in acting capacity. Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Mr. Abubakar Malami, had facilitated a letter directing the most senior officer, Mrs. Otti Ovravah, who has been acting, to hand over to Ojukwu. The directive is in contravention of Section 8 of NHRC Act 2010, which requires Senate to confirm the appointment of the Executive Secretary of the commission. But the…

President Muhammadu Buhari’s only son, Mr. Yusuf Buhari, involved in a ghastly motorbike accident last December, returned to the country Monday after undergoing further treatment overseas. Benue State Governor, Mr Samuel Ortom, on Monday raised fresh concerns of possible herdsmen attacks in the state. The governor dropped this hint when he led senior pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Mr Paul Enenche, and his wife, Becky, to the cemetery of the 73 victims of the New Year Fulani herdsmen attacks. The governor hinged his alarm on the influx of over one million cattle into the state despite the launch of Ayem Akpatuma military exercise last Tuesday. Ortom, who decried the influx of herdsmen into the state, appealed to the military to flush out the invaders so…
Nigeria's army and police on Monday publicly disagreed over the security arrangements that were in place in the northeastern town where 110 girls were abducted by suspected Boko Haram militants. The army issued a statement in which it said soldiers were withdrawn from Dapchi, in Yobe state, before the girls were seized from their school in the town by armed insurgents on Feb. 19. The attack was one of the largest abductions since the Chibok kidnappings of 2014 in which more than 250 girls were taken by the Islamist militant group. It has prompted questions about the ability of security…
Frightened students on Monday stayed away from the school in northern Nigeria where Boko Haram extremists seized 110 girls in a raid a week ago, while the military said it had handed over the town's security to police ahead of the attack because it was "relatively calm." The mass abduction from the Government Girls Science and Technical College in Dapchi has reminded many of Boko Haram's kidnapping of 276 girls from a boarding school in Chibok in 2014. Anger has been growing as the government struggles to respond to the latest attack. Teachers resumed classes a day after Nigeria's government…
