The Court of Appeal in London ruled on Wednesday that two Nigerian communities cannot pursue Royal Dutch Shell in English courts over oil spills in Nigeria's Delta region. The split decision upheld a High Court ruling last year that was a setback to attempts to hold British multinationals liable at home for their subsidiaries' actions abroad. The court rejected the appeal from law firm Leigh Day on behalf of Nigeria's Bille and Ogale communities, and upheld a ruling that English courts do not have jurisdiction over claims against Shell's Nigerian subsidiary Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC). Boko Haram membership thinning out – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday in Abuja said the era of Boko Haram terrorism is gradually drawing to end, with the narrowing of the recruitment base of the insurgents, and renewed onslaught by Nigerian Army. Receiving Letter of Credence of Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See to Nigeria, Mr Antonio Filipazzi, at the State House, Mr Buhari said the terrorist group had lost appeal in its initial strongholds, necessitating a steady retreat that will eventually culminate in ending the insurgency. “You can’t indoctrinate people who are below the age of 14 years and blow up churches, mosques, markets and you keep…

Buhari is in a trance - Soyinka

Nobel laureate, Mr Wole Soyinka, has said President Muhammadu Buhari is in a trance. Soyinka said he came to his conclusion based on “unforced errors,” adding that the President’s body language had aggravated killings by herdsmen in the country. The playwright spoke in Lagos on Tuesday at a press conference titled, ‘Nomads and nation: Valentine card or valedictory rites.’ Soyinka, while reacting to a question on the three things he would tell the President if he met him, said, “I will say Mr. President you are in a trance.” He noted that the sooner the President got out of the…

Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has given a 24-hour ultimatum to officials of unauthorised government agencies to vacate the seaports or risk being arrested. NPA, therefore, reiterated that only eight federal government agencies were allowed to operate and have physical representation at all port locations in the country. General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications of NPA, Mr Abdullahi Goje, in…

It was drama on Monday at the headquarters of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in Abuja, as workers continued their protest over the reinstatement of Executive Secretary, Mr Usman Yusuf, prompting police intervention. The protest was initially by workers in support of President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to reinstate Yusuf, overriding the recommendation of Minister of Health, Mr Isaac Adewole. But on getting to NHIS headquarters, they encountered another group of workers protesting the reinstatement of the embattled Executive Secretary, who Adewole suspended in June 2017, following allegations of gross misconduct, and who is under probe for alleged N919million fraud.
