Funmi Olaitan, Ibadan Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has advised the Federal Government against the planned establishment of cattle colonies across the country, describing the move as tantamount to modern slavery. He made his position known on the raging matter during a visit by Alaafin of Oyo, Mr Lamidi Adeyemi, who led some prominent traditional rulers to the Government House, Ibadan, on Thursday. Mr Adeyemi, who shared similar sentiments with the governor on the matter, also said the idea is ill-advised and unacceptable to the people of Oyo kingdom. An Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has affirmed the decision of the Senate to reject Mr Ibrahim Magu as chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Magu was nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari twice. On both occasions, the Senate rejected the nomination. The court made the decision two weeks ago, but PREMIUM TIMES only got copies of the ruling on Thursday. According to the ruling, Justice John Tsoho ruled that EFCC was wrong in its assumption that the Senate was only there to confirm any choice made by the executive. The judge said the Senate has the powers…

Senate to Buhari: Sack Magu now or else ...

The Senate has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to as a matter of urgency sack Acting Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu. According to the Senate, failure to do that means it would henceforth not attend to nominations from the Presidency, just as it vowed that it would not in any way, jettison its earlier position on the EFCC boss. According to the Senate, the impasse would persist until its power of confirmation of nominees to the boards of commissions established by enabling laws, but not listed in the 1999 Constitution as amended was clarified. Senate spokesman,…

Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mr Matthew Kukah, on Tuesday said fighting corruption and fixing Nigeria required more than a God-fearing leader. Kukah said this at the launch of a book titled “The Shadow List’’ written by Todd Moss and organised by African Centre for Media and Information Literacy in Abuja. He said to fight corruption and build the nation was not just about goodwill but about getting to the root of the matter and tackling it head-on. “I have said it severally; let Nigerians keep saying they want a God-fearing leader. “Nigeria does not need a God-fearing leader, because…
Cameroonian troops crossed into neighbouring Nigeria in pursuit of separatist rebels, a Nigerian state defence spokesman and a former community leader said on Wednesday. Cameroon has been fighting Anglophone separatists who have taken up arms over the past year in an attempt to create a nation which they call Ambazonia. The insurgency represents the gravest challenge yet to the 35-year rule of Cameroon's President Paul Biya. More than 43,000 Cameroonians have fled as refugees to Nigeria to escape the government crackdown on the separatists, say local aid officials.
