Pilot makes point with syringe in the sky

German pilot Samy Kramer has traced a giant syringe in the sky, flying 200 kilometers to remind people about the start of the Covid-19 vaccination campaign in Europe. The 20-year-old pilot mapped out the route he would need to take on a GPS device before taking to the skies near Lake Constance in southern Germany. The syringe-shaped route showed up on internet site flightradar24. “There are still relatively many people opposing the vaccination and my action may be a reminder for them to think about the topic, to get things moving”, Kramer told Reuters TV on Sunday, adding that his…
Apu Sarker was showing his open palm to me on a video call from his home in Bangladesh. Nothing seemed unusual at first, but as I looked closer I could see the smooth surfaces of his fingertips. Apu, who is 22, lives with his family in a village in the northern district of Natore. He was working as a medical assistant until recently. His father and his grandfather were farmers. The men in Apu's family appear to share a genetic mutation so rare it is thought to affect only a small handful of families in the world: they have no…
Every year since 1961, the Veal family has been celebrating Christmas by creating their now-traditional giant ice tree on their property in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. It has become known as the Veal Ice Tree and is considered a seasonal tourist attraction. If you’ve had enough of traditional Christmas trees and you’re looking for something more original, you’re going to love the Veal Ice Tree. It looks nothing like a tree, in fact no living trees have ever been used in the creation of this magnificent ice sculpture, but it became known as the ice tree a long time ago, and…

Airline flies passengers to the wrong airport

Nepali airline Buddha Air made a blunder recently when it flew passengers to the wrong airport. The domestic airline departed from Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport on December 18. From there it flew northwest to the country's second-biggest city of Pokhara, instead of going southeast to the flight's intended destination, the southern city of Janakpur. The two cities are about 250 miles apart. Astha Basnet, executive officer at Buddha Air, tells CNN Travel that the mix-up was due to two factors: "lapses in communication and failure to follow detailed standard operating procedures (SOP)." In simpler terms, it was just a mix-up.…
Feroza Syed couldn't believe what she saw happen in front of her: a man threw a large drink directly at the woman working in the drive-thru window at a fast-food restaurant in suburban Atlanta. Apparently, he didn't want ice in his drink. When Syed pulled up, the woman, Bryanna, was soaked and crying. She was also six months pregnant. Syed gave her a $20 tip, expressed her outrage at the man's behavior and offered to contact the police. Hours later -- and still fuming -- Syed posted about the incident earlier this month on her Facebook page and got a…
Jupiter and Saturn will appear to be so close from Earth on Dec. 21 that they may look like one shining star. Look up at the night sky on Dec. 21 and you may see something special. The planets of Jupiter and Saturn will appear (weather-permitting) on the winter solstice to be so close from Earth that they may look like one shining star, even though they’ll actually be 450 million miles apart. The so-called “Great Conjunction” last happened in 1623 but could not be seen from Earth. Before that, the phenomenon previously occurred on March 4, 1226. 2020’s celestial…
Around 20 Spanish children ended up growing hair all over their bodies after being administered hair restoring medicine, instead of syrup for upset stomachs. In a shocking incident first in the summer of 2019, almost two dozen children reportedly started exhibiting symptoms of hypertrichosis, aka “werewolf syndrome”. They started growing hair excessively all over their bodies, after being administered minoxidil, a drug that stimulates hair growth, instead of omeprazole, usually prescribed for gastric problems. The mix-up allegedly happened after mislabeled syrups were delivered to pharmacies in Granada and Valencia, which chemsist prescribed to treat the upset stomachs of little ones.…
A man was taken into custody after he climbed onto the wing of an Alaska Airlines plane at the Las Vegas airport Saturday, an airport spokesman said. Flight 1367 from Las Vegas to Portland was preparing for takeoff from McCarran International Airport when the pilot noticed a person coming toward the aircraft and notified the control tower, Alaska Airlines said in a statement. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and airport officials took the man into custody, airport spokesman Joe Rajchel told CNN. The man had hopped a perimeter fence and was observed by airport staff around 1:40 p.m. PST, according…
A Florida couple said they are grateful to a "Christmas angel" who found their bag containing $250,000 worth of jewelry and tracked them down to return it. Joe Fitzgerald of Pinellas County said he and his wife, Elif, attended the annual Denim and Diamonds charity event for Hands Across the Bay on Saturday, and they were among the sponsors of the event so they had a lot to pack up at the end of the night.
