A rat has for the first time won a British charity’s top civilian award for animal bravery, receiving the honor for searching out unexploded landmines in Cambodia. Magawa, a giant African pouched rat, was awarded the PDSA’s Gold Medal for his “lifesaving bravery and devotion” after discovering 39 landmines and 28 items of unexploded ordinance in the past seven years, according to the charity. First known as the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals, PDSA started as a free veterinary clinic in 1917 and has honored heroic animals since 1943. Magawa was trained by a Belgian organization that has taught rats…
Russian authorities mounted a special operation to arrest a former traffic police officer who claims to be the reincarnation of Jesus and has run a cult based in the depths of Siberia for the past three decades. Helicopters and armed officers stormed communities run by Sergei Torop, known to his followers as Vissarion, and arrested him and two of his aides. Russia’s investigative committee said it would charge him with organising an illegal religious organisation, alleging that the cult extorted money from followers and subjected them to emotional abuse. Torop, 59, with long grey hair and a beard, was led…

It took decades, but Chuck Feeney, the former billionaire cofounder of retail giant Duty Free Shoppers has finally given all his money away to charity. He has nothing left now—and he couldn’t be happier. Charles “Chuck” Feeney, 89, who cofounded airport retailer Duty Free Shoppers with Robert Miller in 1960, amassed billions while living a life of monklike frugality. As a philanthropist, he pioneered the idea of Giving While Living—spending most of your fortune on big, hands-on charity bets instead of funding a foundation upon death. Since you can't take it with you—why not give it all away, have control…
A US university investigation into one of its professors has ignited a debate over the use of a seemingly innocuous Chinese word. Mr Greg Patton, a Professor at University of Southern California (USC) was telling students in a communications lecture last month about filler, or pause words, such as 'err', 'umm' or 'you know' in English. Footage of his lecture, which has now gone viral, shows Patton saying: "In China, the common pause word is 'that, that, that'. So in China, it might be na-ge, na-ge, na-ge." Enunciated, na-ge sounds like the N-word, which led several of the professor's students…
A line of elephants trundles across a dusty landscape in northern Botswana, ears flapping and trunks occasionally brushing the ground. As they pass a motion-activated camera hidden in low shrubbery, photos record the presence of each elephant. What’s special about this group? It’s only males. Female elephants are known to form tight family groups led by experienced matriarchs. Males were long assumed to be loners, because they leave their mother’s herd when they reach 10 to 20 years of age. A new study shows that teenage males aren’t anti-social after all. Younger male elephants were seen tagging along behind older…
What's 869,463,853 times 73? While the average person would still be reaching for their calculator, 20-year-old Neelakantha Bhanu Prakash already has the answer. It's 63,470,861,269 and it takes just 26 seconds for Bhanu, known in India as the "world's fastest human calculator," to work it out in his head. According to the Limca Book of Records -- India's equivalent to Guinness World Records -- Bhanu's mind processes numbers at an average speed of 12 per second, around 10 times faster than a regular brain. Bhanu says he's able to make such complex calculations at breakneck speed through "structured practice." "Let's…
Everyone knew Rosalie Lewis as the first Black woman postal service supervisor in Louisiana. Her husband, John Lewis, was a Kroger truck driver who knew every bayou backroad. On Thursday, they hunkered down with three other family members to ride out the historic Hurricane Laura, with winds so powerful it shredded nearby homes. They survived; their house did too. Hours later, four of them were dead from generator fumes. “It’s an awful reminder that even when you do everything right, these things can happen,” Frances Spencer, a cousin who’d heard her relatives were fine right after landfall, told BuzzFeed News…

Lightning kills 10 children in Uganda

Ten children have been killed in a lightning strike in a remote Ugandan town near Congo border, Ugandan police said Friday.
