Fears grew on Monday that the coronavirus outbreak in China will grow into a pandemic with disruptive and deadly consequences for countries around the world, after sharp rises in infections in South Korea, Italy and Iran. A surge of infections in South Korea and Italy, and an alarming rise in the death toll in Iran over the weekend, triggered steep falls in Asian share markets and Wall Street stock futures on Monday as investors fled to safe havens such as gold. Shares and oil prices tumbled while gold soared to a seven-year high. The Korean won fell 0.8% to its…
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, said on Saturday the repatriated money looted by the late Head of State Sani Abacha would be used for the development of critical infrastructure. Malami said in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Mr Umar Gwandu, there was no form of agreement to hand over $100m out of the latest tranche of the recovered $300m Abacha loot to Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu or any third party interest. He said Bagudu was pursuing separate cases in court in the United States and United…
The U.S. is opposing plans by federal government to hand about $100 million the American authorities say was stolen by deceased former dictator Sani Abacha to a top ruling party official. The disagreement may hamper future cooperation between the two nations to recover state money moved offshore by Abacha, who Transparency International estimates may have looted as much as $5 billion during his 1993-98 rule. A commitment by Nigeria to transfer the funds to Kebbi state Governor Abubakar Bagudu appears to undermine President Muhammadu Buhari’s pledge to quell rampant graft in Africa’s top oil producer. The U.S. Department of Justice…
Chief of Army Staff, Mr Tukur Buratai, yesterday said with the renewed zeal shown by Nigerian troops battling Boko Haram and Islamic State for West African Province (ISWAP) in Northeast, as well as the menace of the terrorists and their criminalities may end in just a matter of days. In a letter written to the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Mr Olusegun Adeniyi, Buratai praised the commanders “for their gallantry, patriotism and commitment to the war effort by decimating the leadership and rank and file of the insurgents.” On the same day that Buratai pledged an end to the insurgency,…
National President of Miyetti Allah Kautel Hore socio-cultural organisation, Mr Abdullahi Bodejo, has said that the arrest of some Fulani leaders over the recent crisis in Plateau State where about 20 persons were killed, was discriminatory. Bodejo told VINCENT KALU, in an interview that if the Nigerian authorities don’t stop the operations of Amotekun and Shege ka fasa, his group would come up with its own security outfit to protect its members. “If we are pushed to set up our own security outfit, nobody can control it because nobody knows how many Fulani are in Nigeria; we are more than…
Senate on Thursday began moves to establish an agency that would see to the rehabilitation, deradicalisation and integration of repentant insurgents in the country. A bill, sponsored by Mr Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe East senatorial district, was read for the first time on the floor of Senate Thursday. Already a subject of fierce push back, the bill offers further concession to Boko Haram militants who choose to cease fire. Last month, Nigerian military said no fewer than 608 repentant Boko Haram insurgents were undergoing De-radicalisation, Rehabilitation and Reintegration (DRR) programme under its Operation Safe Corridor in Malam-Sidi, Gombe State. ‘Clients’,…
As part of the international campaign to put pressure on the federal government to negotiate the release of Leah Sharibu, a group of Nigerians, including Leah Sharibu’s mother have staged a protest at the premises of Nigerian High Commission in the United Kingdom, calling on the British government to intensify pressure on President Muhammadu Buhari to secure the release of the remaining Dapchi school girl. A petition with 12,132 signatures was also submitted to a member of UK Parliament, Mrs Caroline Cox, by Leah’s mother, Mrs Rebecca Sharibu, calling on federal government to secure her daughter’s freedom. Spokesperson for the…
Britain needs more ballerinas, biochemists and welders—but only “high integrity pipe welders” with at least three years’ experience. These are among the occupations which appear on the official “shortage occupation list” (SOL), a list set to become far more important under a proposed shake-up of immigration rules. The new system will treat migrants equally, regardless of where they hail from. Europeans will no longer benefit from freedom of movement, but the bar to entry from the rest of the world will fall: prospective migrants will require the equivalent of A-levels, not degrees. The government claims it will let in more…
European Union says it would impose restrictive visa implementation rules on Nigeria, if it fails to play its part in the return and readmission of its nationals staying illegally in the EU. EU, which comprises Germany, Italy, Spain, France and 23 other countries, further stated that although it would not place a visa ban on Nigeria, it could make its visas more difficult for Nigerian applicants if Nigeria failed to meet its standards. EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Ms Virginie Battu-Henriksson, said this in an email chat with The PUNCH on Tuesday. Recall that United States had…
Nigeria’s federal, states and local governments on Wednesday shared a total of N647.35 billion for January as the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting ended in Lagos. The N647.35 billion shared is 9.63 per cent lower than the N716.29 billion shared in December 2019. Mr Mahmoud Isa-Dutse, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, made the announcement while briefing journalists after the meeting. He said the reduction in the allocation was due to what was provided by Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for the month. Isa-Dutse said FIRS had explained that…
